Administrative history
In the summer of 1972, the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick conducted a project on the history of the Minto area, located in central New Brunswick, about 35 miles from Fredericton, on Grand Lake. The Minto district was one of the first areas in North America to export coal. Regular production began in 1825 but it was not until 1890, when the Central Railway line to Chipman was completed, that large scale production began.
The project workers were only able to secure the records of one of a number of small companies which operated in the area. The Evans Brothers Company was founded in 1903 and in 1906 was reorganized by Saint John interests and renamed the Rothwell Coal Company. The company was the first to use a steam shovel to strip out coal and also converted from horsepower to steam for hoisting purposes. As a result of these and other modern techniques, the output of the mine increased by 300 per cent by the First World War.
Custodial history
These records were assembled in the course of the project from the Rothwell Coal Company, local officials of the United Mine Workers of America, private individuals and local historians. Records from the Crown Lands Department were also copied and added to the collection.
Scope and content
This collection consists of records of the Rothwell Coal Company (formerly Evans Brothers), 1906-1950, including maps and plans. There are records of collective agreements and other labour records. The recollections of some local residents, writings by Marion Upton, a local historian, and printed reports, mostly from government bodies have been included.
