Administrative history

The Lord Beaverbrook Scholarship Foundation was formed by 1915 to support the scholastic endeavours of New Brunswick university students. Lord Beaverbrook himself was heavily involved with university life in New Brunswick, especially the creation of the library and archives. A special collection and reading room at the Harriet Irving Library, University of New Brunswick, Fredericton bears his name. The awards include undergraduate scholarships, law scholarships, overseas scholarships and teacher's scholarships.

Custodial history

The bulk of the fonds was donated to the Provincial Archives by R.A Tweedie of Fredericton, New Brunswick in 1970. In 1992 a letter from Lord Beaverbrook to a T.W. Tomlison was transferred from the Government Records section of the Archives and placed in this collection.

Scope and content

The fonds consists primarily of correspondence and applications for the Lord Beaverbrook scholarships. There are also minutes of the scholarship committee from 1920-1944 and a card index.

Physical condition

Immediate source of acquisition

Most of the fonds was donated by R. A. Tweedie, Lord Beaverbrook's assistant in 1970. A letter from Lord Beaverbrook to T. W. Tomlison, dated September 29, 1959, was transferred from Government Records in December 1992.
