Biographical history
John Collins was a surveyor of lumber who resided in Indiantown, which was part of the town of Portland, New Brunswick. In the late 19th century, Portland amalgamated with the city of Saint John. Collins was working as a surveyor as early as 1865 and was still so employed in 1870. It is probable that he had two sons, David and John, who also worked as lumber surveyors in the Saint John area in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
