Biographical history
John B. Calkin (1827-1870) was born in Kings County, New Brunswick. He married Margaret Morrison (d. 1903) of Saint John in 1858. John Bennett Calkin owned a general merchandise store in Sussex Corner and was postmaster in the mid-1860s. Around 1868 or 1869, John Calkin moved to Saint John where he acted as agent for the Mispec Cotton Mills, part of the Saint John Manufacturing Company. John Calkin also owned two ships, "Belle WAlters", brigantine purchased in 1868 and the "Annie E.", a schooner built in 1868.
Jeremiah Calkin was the executor of John B. Calkin's estate. He was also a resident of the Sussex area. He married Mary Elizabeth Seymour Patterson in 1849. Jeremiah Calkin was a relative of John B. Calkin, possibly a brother.
