Notice biographique

Herbert Mariner Wood was born on May 10, 1877 to Josiah and Laura Sophia (Trueman). He married Ethel Blanche Sumner on June 1, 1905, in Westmorland, New Brunswick. They had two children: Margaret Sumner Wood (1908) and Josiah Wood (1907). He died in 1966 in Sackville, New Brunswick. Herbert Mariner Wood’s father, Josiah Wood, purchased the Crane House in 1867 from William Crane. When he eventually passed away in 1927 the house went to his eldest son, Herbert. After a fire in 1939 burned the mansard roof he replaced it with the original style of 1836 Georgian style and renamed it Cranewood. Herbert attended Cornell University located in Ithaca, New York, USA between the years 1901-1905, but may have started at the university earlier than 1901.

Historique de la conservation

Fonds was donated to the Tantramar Heritage Trust in 2021 by Bill Long. Who owned the Sackville Harness Shop for 25 years and said the photo was in the shop for as long as he can remember. Herbert M. Wood’s daughter was Margaret S. Wood and she married Josiah W. Black. Josiah W. Black’s grandfather was Joseph L. Black. His great uncle was Silas Freeze Black who built the Sackville Harness Shop in 1846. This possibly explains how the photograph of the Cornell University Hockey team may have come to be at the Sackville Harness Shop.

Portée et contenu

Fonds relates to the activities of Herbert Mariner Wood while attending Cornell University, though his primary residence was in Sackville, New Brunswick. Fonds consists of a photograph of the 1904-1905 Cornell University Hockey team with Herbert Mariner Wood pictured in the middle bottom row of the photo. Others in the photo include: unknown, unknown (Coach?), and A.R. Ellis (top row left to right), and J.M. Lee, E.S. Armstrong, Herbert Mariner Wood (Capt.), C.H. Day, and unknown (bottom row left to right). The only player with a direct connection to Sackville appears to be Herbert Mariner Wood. (PB3.8)
