Administrative history

A Period of prosperity had followed the introduction at the end of 1878 of prime minister Sir John A. Macdonald’s National policy which imposed duties on manufactured goods coming from the United States. This must have been a factor in his decision to establish a shoe factory. With his brothers, Daniel G. Hanson, a Ship's Captain, and Richard B. Hanson who was in the lumbering business as partners. A Steam Engine was Purchased in 1883. Production in the Hanson Bros. Shoe Factory Began in June. Travellers were engaged to go out and solicit orders from retailers in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Business was good at first but there was an increasing amount of competition and complaints about unsatisfactory goods, leading to the closure of the business in 1892.
