Notice biographique

Dr. George Boardman Noyes (1837-1927) was born at Atkinson, Maine, to David Jewett Noyes (1809-1883) and Nancy Barney (1817-1859). During the American Civil War, he served in the 11th Maine Volunteers as a company sergeant in 1861-1862 and as a hospital steward in 1864-1865. He married Sarah Elizabeth Lake in 1865. The couple moved to Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick, where Noyes practised medicine at North Head from 1871 to 1892. Three of their sons--George H. (1867-1881), Everett C. (1869-1880), and Benjamin Lake (1870-1945)--were born in Phipsburg and Lisbon, Maine. After they moved to Grand Manan, six more children were born: David Jewett (b. 1872), Abbie W. (b. 1873), Florence May (b.1876), Percy (1878-1880), George B. (b. 1881) and Galen C. ( b. 1885). 3 children were lost and buried at North Head.

Noyes purchased forty acres of land on Grand Manan from Mr. Brancroft on which he built a house, an orchard, and a vegetable garden. While on Grand Manan, Dr. Noyes became a naturalized Canadian citizen, and was an active member of the community. He was given a license to preach by the Free Will Baptists, was a justice of the peace and acting magistrate, served as a member of the County Council and chairman of the local Board of Health, and also served terms as road commissioner and school trustee. Moreover, he was a member of the Grand Council of the Lodge, and owner of the Island Press. Dr. Noyes left Grand Manan in 1892. He died in Stonington, Maine, in 1927.
