Biographical history
Amos Henry Chandler was born in Dorchester, Westmorland County, New Brunswick on 8 August 1837. He was the son of Edward Barron Chandler (1800-1880) and Phoebe Walker (Millidge) Chandler (1802-1889). He attended the Fredericton Grammar School and the Mount Allison Wesleyan Academy for two terms in 1854. He studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and practice in small communities throughout New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. He jointly published a volume of poetry entitled “Lyrics, songs and sonnets” with Rev. Charles Pelham Mulvany in Toronto in May of 1880. His poems appeared frequently in local papers, often under the pseudonym “Sylvius.” He married Elspeth Russell Kirk (1838-1870) of Saint John, New Brunswick. After her death, he married Miss C.E. Kirk. He had one child from the second marriage: Phoebe Helen Charlotte Chandler ([ca 1867]-1946). He died on 3 May 1919.
Custodial history
The Amos Henry Chandler fonds was donated to the Mount Allison University Archives by Mrs. Joan Robinson of Whitwell, Hitchin, England via Dr. Gwendolyn Davies, who acted as intermediary in 1993.
Scope and content
Fonds consists of personal papers belonging to A.H. Chandler, including his published and unpublished poems, correspondence and criticisms; letters, manuscript stories and a poem by Silas T. Rand; a letter by Sir Charles G. D. Roberts with a signed and inscribed copy of his publication "Later Poems"; printed works of other writers; and a letter to Edward Baron Chandler from Charles W. Upham, Salem, Massachusetts, 1869.
Physical condition
The papers are in poor condition. It appears that they had been exposed to dampness, and molds have formed, leaving deposits on many items. A few notebooks appear to have another substance between the pages, which fused them together. Each page that could be separated was dusted with a fine brush to remove surface dirt (some pages had already been forced, causing slight tears). Notebooks which were damp were left open for several days to dry. Due to the presence of mildew, wrinkled items were placed under weights for straightening, rather than placing them in the humidification tank.
Throughout the papers there appear to be four different examples of handwriting. Two are Amos Chandler’s - a very neat, leisurely written script, and another that is carelessly and probably hastily written, with portions barely decipherable. In the notebook containing the poem “Songs of immortality” 1887(file 1/1/9), the annotations are by Professor Roberts (C.G.D. Roberts, see file 1/1/11). The fourth example of handwriting appears throughout the papers and are often in pencil. Rather than editorial comments or annotations by a critic, the writer appears to be making revisions, lengthy additions, or re-writing portions of the poems. It is not possible to determine conclusively if these were by AH Chandler, or if a third individual may have been the author of these revisions.
The contents underwent conservation at the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick in 2001.
