History
Francis Peabody Sharp (1823-1903) was a leading horticulturist in New Brunswick. He was born in Woodstock, N.B., son of Adam Sharp, a farmer, lumberman and merchant. His mother was Maria Peabody. Francis was a salesman and bookkeeper in his father's store until he was 20, and then engaged in raising fruit trees and growing fruit. He did a great deal of research on soil qualities and agricultural chemistry and did field testing on his own orchards to ascertain differences in soil. He was a pioneer in the breeding of apple varieties for Canadian climates. He had seven orchards with 10,000 trees and a nursery which included 175,000 apple trees and 80,000 plum trees. His market included the Maritimes and the United States.
He married Maria Shaw, of Wakefield parish, Carleton county, in 1853. They had eight children.
