Notice biographique
The Tweedie family immigrated to Canada in 1822 when Robert Tweedie (?-1863) and his wife Sarah Dowler (?-1870) left Leitrim County, Connacht, Ireland for Williamstown, New Brunswick. The couple had 10 children, 5 of whom were born in New Brunswick. Three of their sons, William, Robert, and James, all became Methodist ministers in the Maritime provinces.
William Tweedie (1820-1903) married Dorcas Dykeman Calkin (1832-1909) in 1856 and they had three children: Leora Rebecca Tweedie (1858-1951), William Morley Tweedie (1862-1951), and Nettie Eliza Hayward (Tweedie) Beer (1867-1948), all three of whom attended the Mount Allison institutions.
James Tweedie (1826-1898) married Rachel Susannah Smith (?-1912) in 1861 and they had four children: Sarah Jane May (1864-?), Clara Gardiner (1865-?), Reynolds Knowlton (1867-1915), and Thomas Mitchell (1872-1944).

Portée et contenu
Fonds consists of records created and accumulated by members of the Tweedie family, including William and Dorcas (Calkin) Tweedie and their children William Morley Tweedie, Leora Rebecca Tweedie, Nettie Eliza Hayward (Tweedie) Beer, and James Tweedie and his son Thomas Mitchell Tweedie. The contents of the fonds have been divided into 6 sous-fonds and 3 collections.
État de conservation
The majority of the fonds is in good condition. A portion (5%) of the textual records have suffered some damage as a result of vermin, water, or tears. Notes have been made at the item level to describe the extent of the damage. The picture and postcard collections remain in excellent condition.
Source immédiate d'acquisition
The contents of the fonds were probably received by the Mount Allison University Archives shortly after William Morley Tweedie or Leora Rebecca Tweedie’s deaths in 1952. The source is unverified.
Classement
The arrangement of this fonds was imposed by the archivist during the re-arrangement of the fonds conducted in 2019 and was based on prior arrangement work conducted by the original processing archivist as well as evidence left behind by members of the Tweedie family concerning the arrangement of their personal papers.
