Special editions of the Castine Patriot newspaper promote local activities to celebrate the re-enactment of the 1783 evacuation of Loyalists from Castine, Maine to St. Andrews New Brunswick ; articles provide a schedule of activities and a brief history of the Castine-St. Andrews connection with the Loyalist settlement in 1783. The fonds consists of family records. There are two lot certificates for land on Germain Street, dated 1783, belonging to John Chaloner (lot 553) and Benjamin Chaloner (lot 554). There is a commission of 1827 appointing Benjamin Chaloner tide surveyor, gauger, and weightmaster in Saint John. There is also a bond, dated 1828, given by Ninyon Chaloner to Benjamin C. Chaloner, executor of John Chaloner's estate. It bound Ninyon to ensure that Peggy, a Black woman who had been the late John Chaloner's servant, received comfortable care during her lifetime and at her death, a decent burial at Ninyon's expense.

This collection contains documents belonging to Reverend Charles M. Smith of Rollingdam, New Brunswick, including both documents related to his research projects into local history as well as his duties as a Reverend. Documents related to these duties include marriage records for marriages performed by Charles Smith, and his notes and drafts for eulogies that were done at funeral services. Documents related to Charles Smith’s research projects include hand drawn and printed maps and drawings, published material and primary documents used by Charles Smith to support his research, and notes on church history, roadwork and early travel, local history, Charlotte County schools, and genealogical data. Also included are St. Croix Courier articles and essays written by Charles Smith, as well as the drafts for those items, and his correspondences, which include letters containing information related to his research and more personal letters.

Correspondence

This series contains letters from E. Jacqueline Davis to her mother and “Vidy” concerning her experiences working as a nurse on a US Army camp on the island of Tinian in the Pacific Ocean near Japan. In these letters Jacqueline discusses her voyage across the Pacific to Tinian, developments during the final days of the war with Japan, what camp life is like, encounter the Japanese civilians and POW*, and events happening at home. Other textual documents in this series include a notice of a change of address for Jacqueline, programmes for church services on Tinian, a document detailing how to mail Christmas packages to soldiers overseas, a map of the Pacific islands, and a document outlining regulations for troop transport. There are also a few newspaper articles, which include several issues of “This Small World”, a newspaper published at the military camp Tinian which has articles on developments of war with Japan and in Europe as well as sports and other items of interest. There are a few other newspapers for enlisted personnel.
