Biographical history
Martha V. Gilmore Johnston was born about 1863, the third of eight children of Thomas Gilmore and Mary Howe. Her father's family were descended from the Loyalist Joseph Gilmore and her mother's family were related to the Duke of Sutherland. As a child Martha lived in the village of Stanley, New Brunswick and, after local schooling, attended the Normal School in Fredericton. She taught at Williamsburg before she was 17 and later at Covered Bridge (Upper Nashwaak) and English Settlement. On 15 February 1888 she married James Johnston and moved to Massachusetts. Later the Johnstons relocated to Alberta where she was living in 1939 when she wrote this account of her early life in response to her grandchildren's requests.
