Biographical history

Suzanne Silvercruys was born in Belgium in 1898, the daughter of Baron Silvercruys, President of the Belgian Supreme Court. She escaped from Belgium to the United States in 1915 and worked as a fundraiser for Belgian relief efforts. In 1928 she earned a BA in fine arts at Yale University and had a career as a professional sculptor specializing in busts of notable persons, including Ralph Pickard Bell, first Chancellor of Mount Allison University. She married Edward Fox Stevenson and was active in Republican politics. She received an LL.D. from Mount Allison in 1966 and died 1 April 1973.

Scope and content

Fonds consists of records generated by Silvercruys activities as fundraiser and sculptor. Files contain correspondence; scrapbooks containing clippings on tour of U.S. for Belgium Relief Committee, exhibitions, speaking engagements; awards and certificates; subject files; photographs of self and family; photographs of her artwork (sculpture, busts, paintings by Silvercruys); audio tape cassette "The Communist Conspiracy", 1966.
