History
Rufus Palmer Steeves, M.A., born in 1858 at Harvey, Albert County, son of Mathias and Mary Jane (Bennett) Steeves. He married Minnie, daughter of James and Catherine (Constantine) McNaughton), she died in 1900 and he would remarry to Susan MacKenzie. He obtained a B.A. (1878) and M.A. (1888) from Mount Allison University. He began his career as a teacher at Hopwell School. In 1886, he became prinicipal of the Woodstock Grammar School. In 1892, he was appointed school inspector for Kings, Albert and part of Saint John and Queens Counties. He helped to establish consolidated schools in the province and was the first director of elementary agricultural education in New Brunswick. He retired in 1923 do to ill health. He died in 1937 at Balboa, Panama Canal Zone. His children were: Clarence Steeves; Mrs. Chester M. Somerville; Mrs. F. Arnold Jewett; Rufus P.
Clarence McNaughton Steeves was born in 1884 at Hopewell Hill, Albert County, New Brunswick, son of Rufus Palmer and Minnie (McNaughton) Steeves. He married Ethel M. Smith in 1912. He attended the University of New Brunswick with a B.A.I. in 1905 and a M.Sc. in 1913, civil engineering. He was commissioned as a Lieutenant in 1915 and went overseas with the 155th Battalion, then transferred to the 9th Field Company, Canadian Engineers and was promoted to Captain. He was Assistant Engineer for the I.C.R., 1905-1906; Transitman C.P.R., North Bay, Ont., 1906-1908; Assistant Engineer, D.P.W. Canada, Saint John, 1908-1911; Harbour Engineer in charge of Courtney Bay Harbour Development and pier extension, 1911-1916; resident superintendant, engineering branch D.S.C.R., Maritime Provinces, 1919-1921; in 1926 engaged in the life insurance business and was appointed Provincial Manager in 1929 of the North American Life Assurance Company.
