Scope and content

This series contains the files created in the preservation of the Seal Cove Crik area and the naming of the area by the National Historic Sites and Monuments Board. The organization created to preserve this area was the Seal Cove Crik and Seawall Preservation Association. Members were the shed owners and the Historical Society - as the Historical Society owned the wharves in the area. Interest waned when no funds could be secured for private owners to make repairs to their buildings or property. The main concern was to secure water access for the fishermen and not have all the buildings become owned by non fishermen. The Grand Manan Harbour Authority rebuilt and updated the working waterfront in Seal Cove and water access for the fishermen was secured for future generations. The Historical Society secured funds to stabilize the Hazen Pier and the Eastern breakwater. Once complete and interest waned the wharves were sold to local fishermen. The sheds have gradually been refurbished and an interesting mix of working sheds and summer accommodations are what remain in 2019.
The series also contains the files of the renovations of the Historical Society building on Cedar Street into an Art Gallery. Once complete the Gallery was turned over to a group who created the Grand Manan Art Gallery organization and who was able to secure funds to maintain the building when the Historical Society did not qualify for these funds.
