Biographical history
The Rev. Samuel Elder, the son of the Rev. William Elder, was born at Halifax, Nova Scotia on 6 February 1817. During his youth, he lived with his parents at Bridgetown, Annapolis County, Nova Scotia were he attended school. In early 1838, Samuel Elder opened a school at Pleasant Valley, Nova Scotia (later known as Western Cornwallis). At that time he was a confirmed Universalist.
After much study, Samuel Elder converted to the Baptist faith and was baptized by the Reverend William Chipman on 5 January 1839. He left his post as a public school teacher about 1840 to attend Acadia College at Wolfville, N.S., graduating in 1844. The following year he visited Fredericton, New Brunswick, and was soon offered the pulpit of Brunswick Street Baptist Church. He remained in Fredericton until 1851, when he retired because of ill health. He died of consumption on 23 May 1852 in the United States of America and was probably buried in Florida.
