History

Robert Salter was a half-pay officer and resided at Parrsboro, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. His account book suggests that he had a general store, lumbering operation, and a farm located near Parrsboro. In the 1840s, he also owned a trading vessel, the "Mary Salter", that sailed from Nova Scotia to various ports, including Boston, New York, Portland, Saint John (N.B.), and Liverpool (England). His trade goods included salt and coal. William W. Salter, possibly the son of Robert Salter, was working with him in the business. Other Salters mentioned in the account book include George Salter, John Salter, and Thomas Salter. Apparently the Salter family was closely connected with the parish church (Church of England) at Parrsboro.
