Robert Frazer Hazen

This fonds consists of the correspondence of Hazen in his role as mayor. Although there are some personal papers in this fonds, the bulk appears to have been created while carrying out the duties of the mayor between 1837 and 1840.

The subjects discussed in the letters include the construction of a breakwater in Saint John harbour, the Carleton ferry and records of the granting of Navy Island to the city in 1823. There are reports from the city inspectors about maintenance of roads and cleaning of the streets and records of licences to sell liquor. Information about the fire of 1839 and the Market House is included. There are also records of the Saint John Society library, the Madras school, and the Pest House. Some of the letters include references to Irish immigration.

Dalton family

This fonds consists of the family and business papers of the Dalton family. There is family correspondence and also business correspondence between Richard Dalton and William Jarvis. The legal records include John Dalton's will, 1872; a coroner's certificate pertaining to Arthur B. Dalton's death, 1889; and a lease for property in Portland, between Samuel Dalton and Samuel Williams in 1838. There are also records of family plots in Saint John Rural Cemetery and Robert Dalton's personal accounts, 1860-1885.

Also included are an undated poem addressed to Miss M. Robertson, of Maugerville, N.B.; Bradberry Robinson's certificate as freeman of the city of Saint John, 1840; and.a muster roll, 1837, of 1st Company Rifle Battalion City Militia.

This fonds consists of a typed manuscript entitled, "The History of the Custom Port of Saint John, N.B.", and a copy of a letter. The history is based on records of the customs department and provides information on such topics as port returns, exports and imports, duties collected, ships clearing and entering, tonnage figures, and monetary values of goods passing through the port of Saint John and its outports of Fredericton, St. Stephen, Sussex and Bathurst.

Included in the history is some description of how collectors were selected and how they were paid. There is a list of customs collectors from 1782-1960, some with individual dates. Statistical summaries include figures for seizures, immigrants, new vessels registered and duties collected. There is also a brief description of the effect of the Great Fire of Saint John in 1877 on the Customs Department.

The letter is a copy of an original of 1960 addressed to R.F. Logan, Collector of Customs, Saint John, N.B. from S.G. Ogilivie, chief of accommodation at the Customs Department acknowledging receipt of the history and praising the work.

Fonds consists of 2 minute books of the Saint John branch of the Women's Enfranchisement Association, 1894-1912, and 1915-1919. There is information about the structure of the meetings, membership including some men (Mr Elliott, Mr. Dykeman and Mr. Rabinawitz?), such as and the executive. Information includes details about political topics discussed at meetings, papers presented by various members, drafts of petitions for woman suffrage to be presented to government during sitting of the Legislature by elected members such as Dr. Silas Alward and W.F. Hatheway, passing out leaflets, and public meetings. There is a list of members of Legislature divided into those favouring woman suffrage and those who opposed it. Another list provides details about bills and petitions to government with dates and the name of the elected member who presented.

This fonds consists of loose notes and printed ephemera. There are programmes of lodge meetings and degree nights and printed memorial and funeral services to be used for deceased members, including cards and certificates. A brochure entitled "Odd Fellowship: Several Reasons Why" with a membership application on the back is included. There are notes for a speech given in commemoration of the Great Fire of 1877 which includes details of the organization's relief work, a list of donations by various lodges and names of committee members.

J.E. Masters

This fonds consists of seamen's wages account books, printed maps and notes. The seamen's wages account books are for the ship "Muskota", and provide Captain (J.E. Masters) and seamen's names, titles, wages, dates of engagement, and financial transactions. The books also provide tables for calculating seamen's wages. There are three maps which show the routes taken by ships under J.E. Masters command, including the "Berteaux".

Four loose pages from a memorandum book contain notes about the ship "Berteaux" and provide dates of departure and arrival from various ports. On the reverse side of the memorandum pages, there are notes of purchases and a list of worldwide contact addresses for Captain Masters. Most are shipping company addresses, including C.W. Berteaux, the firm that built and owned the "Muskota" and the "Berteaux".

It includes a letterbook of Allan MacBeath, 1857-1858; class lists of Victoria and Centennial schools (Saint John) kept by Edith MacBeath, 1888-1926; correspondence, notes and other material of T. Allan MacBeath and certificates and other material of MacBeath family.

Material created by other individuals and collected by MacBeath family includes a scrapbook kept by E.T.C. Knowles, 1870's; correspondence, deeds and other material related to the Botsford, Allan, Cornwall, McPherson, Millidge and Stephen families and a daybook of freight charges kept by Mr. Jones (general merchant, Petitcodiac Bend, Moncton) 1845-1847.

MacBeath family

Paris Crew

This collection consists of various items related to the career of the Paris Crew.. There is a photograph taken at Southampton, England, in 1867 just before they left for France. It includes information about the crew and the races as well as the names of their business manager (Sheriff Harding) and the spare man (Robert MacLaren). There is an agreement between James Renforth and 3 other English oarsmen and the Saint John crew which outlines details of the Anglo-Canadian boat race of 23 August 1871 and sets a prize of £500. A map showing the course is also included.

An official program commemorating the 50th anniversary of the race between the Paris Crew and the Tyne Crew of England provides considerable information about the rowers. There is also a certificate of induction into the New Brunswick Sports Hall of Fame, 3 June 1972. Miscellaneous ephemera includes 2 copies of the "Rowing Song" performed at the Mechanics Institute, Saint John, in 1868, a photocard reproduced from the 1867 photograph, a press clipping of information about the Great Boat Race and poetry by Byron DeWolfe.
