Jack family

This fonds consists of correspondence, legal papers, appointments, financial documents, ephemera, and Jack family notes and writings.

The correspondence, 1833-1899, is primarily family (mostly between Emma and William) and 2 other letters including a letter of reference for William Kenah and a letter to T. Jack with a Notman photo from Lord Frederick Poulet.

Legal papers include deeds and land contracts, court cases (Richard Sands v. James Keaton, Edward L. Thorne, and Lovitt v. Clark, Supreme Court, 1795) and a contract for a yearly allowance to John and Hannah Allan, 1806. There are also resolutions on the death of William Jack in 1886 and draft minutes of an investigation concerning Joseph Hea.

Family writings include a typescript, "Ireland" - E.C.J. about the reminiscences of Emma Carleton Jack of life in Ireland before coming to Canada and provides information about her family members, probably written for her children and grandchildren. Works by William Jack include an account of his life as a lawyer, a personal account of the Saint John fire of 1877, and a short articles about New Brunswick history. There is also some and poetry written by William Jack, aged 20.

There are certicates of appointments for John Curry, as Justice of the Peace, Sunbury Co.; Isaac Allan Jack as Recorder for Saint John, 1885; Joseph Kenah as Captain of 104th Regiment, 1816; and William Jack, Queen's Counsel, 1880. There is also a notebook prepared by D.W. Jack containing instructions for a gauger.

There are a few receipts for general items and a stock certificate for the Caledonia Mining and Manufacturing Company belonging to William Jack.

Ephemera consists of Coronation service booklets (1911), ribbons, menu, dried flowers, a collection of bookplates and envelopes, and a certificate of the Cooper Union Women's School of Art given to Emma Jack.

This fonds consists mainly of the correspondence between John and his brother George while John was in Dumfries, 1826-1832, with George's accounts, 1821-1829. They record both sides of a business importing goods from Scotland and shipping timber to Scotland. There are also family records of the Thomson family, 1788-1908, Scoullar family, 1796-1856, and the Walker family, 1799-1835

J.A. Barry's legal account book consists of alphabetically indexed records of payments for professional services rendered to clients. Services included letter writing, writs, court appearances, title searches, deeds, summons, consultation and preparation of legal documents. The information includes dates and names of clients, both individuals and businesses. There is a number 13 written on the spine of this leather bound account book indicating that there may have been other volumes: their whereabouts is unknown.

This fonds consists of the accounting ledgers of J. S. Parker and Sons. The company appears to be operating as a general store as well as a shipbuilding concern. The accounts record sales to customers, supplies (including lumber) purchased for building ships, and payments to workmen. The company appears to have provided board and lodging for some of its workers, as detailed in the accounts.

This fonds consists primarily of Baxter's records of the Royal Commission to inquire into statements made by "The Standard" concerning the Provincial Hospital at Fairville, New Brunswick. It includes issues of the paper, drafts of the report and testimony, extracts from the press and correspondence. There is also a number of documents collected by Baxter including letters from famous people and original miltiary records of Saint John, 1808-1926.

Cushing family genealogical information includes newspaper obituaries and press clippings, invitations, records of funerals and marriages, Sunday school tracts, pew rentals and records of church membership. Eileen Cushing's papers on Loyalists and early settlers and George S. Cushing's diaries, 1873-1904, are also included.
