Administrative history
In 1960 the Progressive Conservative government of New Brunswick, lead by Hugh John Flemming, was defeated. In September A. J. Brooks, the minister of Veterans Affairs in the federal cabinet of John Diefenbaker, was appointed to the Senate, leaving open the seat for the constituency of Royal in New Brunswick. Hugh John Flemming had been invited by Prime Minister Diefenbaker to become federal minister of Forestry. Flemming resigned his provincial seat and in September 1960 the Royal Progressive Conservative Association nominated him as the candidate to run in the by-election caused by Brooks' resignation. Flemming was elected.
Custodial history
These records were probably assembled and kept by Lloyd Nickerson, the association secretary. They were found in the same basement as the Kings County Probate Court records. How they came to be there is unknown.
Scope and content
The fonds contains records of the Royal Progressive Conservative Association for the months leading up to the nominating convention held in September 1960. It includes correspondence, minutes of meetings, and detailed lists of members of the organizing committees for each polling district.
