Administrative history

The Second World War was the first time the Hussars left Canadian shores as a Regiment. In July 1940, the Regiment was mobilized to form the 4th Canadian Motorcycle Regiment. In February 1941, the Canadian Army converted the Hussars to armour and became the 5th Armoured Regiment. The Regiment sailed for England at the end of August, 1941 and was stationed in England until November, 1943 when it sailed for Africa. The Regiment later sailed to Italy and landed in Naples in December. The Regiment fought through Italy, winning battle honours until February, 1944 when it sailed to France to begin the journey to the campaigns in Belgium and Holland. It was in Italy that the first Princess Louise, the original Regimental mascot

Scope and content

Series consists of materials that includes Various newspaper clippings, some from Great Britain and some from Kings County, as well as full issues of these publications. Reports of War, Veterans returning, Obituaries and awards. A partial copy of a thesis submitted for a Master of Arts degree titled "Warrior for the Working day " , The 5th Armoured Division in Italy 1943-1945. Included is a Booklet Notes for Officers., booklet "The Soldiers Welfare" July 1941. A Booklet "Royal Canadian Armoured Corps". An outline of the development of the RCAC, as well as a Booklet "Home Guard Instruction" November 1942. A compilation of letters and newspaper commentary from England. A Copy of Maple Leaf Article re; War Effort and photograph of the Japanese surrender. Book by Herb Gamblin , "WWII Stage One-Invading". 4 pages from an 8th NB Hussars newsletter with photographs of some members in Italy and Holland at the end of the war and 3 Pages of newspaper clippings . Hand written List of Hussars that served in the Regiment with Ron Jonah. Group Picture of 11, 8th(PL) N.B. Hussars taken on course which includes Charley Stevens and Keith Fisher.
