Biographical history

David Wetmore Pickett (1828-1909) was an Episcopal clergyman at St. Paul's Church at Oak Point, New Brunswick. He was the son of David Pickett and Ruth Sherwood Wetmore. He received his B.Ed. degree from the University of Kings College, Windsor, N.S. He was headmaster of Kings Collegiate School from 1854-1862. He married Helen (d.1900),daughter of Joseph Prescott Boyle and Eliza Collinsat Liverpool, Nova Scotia, in 1852.

Their children included Lucy Vail (1858-1910), the superintendent at the Newport Hospital.; Lewis Sherwood (1855-1882); Margaret Sterns (1857-1943), married Douglas Matthew; George Boyle (1858-1926), married Evelyn S. (1869-1959), daughter of George Inch; William Justus (1861-1927); Bessie (b. d. 1863); John Ambrose (b. 1864), a civil engineer; Eliza Caroline Vail (b. 1866), married Dr. Frederick N. Welling; Frederick Albert (1868-1903), a miniature portrait painter; Helen Angeline (1870-1952), a nurse.

Custodial history

Information about the custody of these records prior to acquisition is incomplete. The genealogical material was probably added to the fonds by the donor.

Scope and content

This fonds includes the correspondence of Pickett family, 1834-1907, most of the early correspondence being letters of David Wetmore and his wife to his parents. Many of the later letters are addressed to David Wetmore's children, especially Lucy and Margaret. There is an acount book with charges for tuition at Kings Collegiate School, 1858-1861, and accounts of the church wardens, 1874-1883.

Other family records include deeds, 1837-1889; sermons and addresses of David Wetmore Pickett, 1876-1906; Horatio Pickett estate papers, 1873-1881; and correspondence and other material regarding the Welling family, 1809-1955. There is also genealogical information on the Pickett, Prescott, Boyle, Collins, Wheddon family.
