This register records the voluntary recruitment of 553 men in Charlotte County, New Brunswick, for service overseas during the First World War, dating from 27 September 1915, when a major recruiting drive was underway in the province, until 30 August 1917, the day after Prime Minister Robert Borden's Military Service Act became law. It may be a manuscript copy of the enlistment register in which names of volunteers were recorded initially during or immediately after recruitment rallies.

Each entry provides the recruit's name, place of residence, age at recruitment, marital status, date of enlistment, nationality, and the unit to which he was assigned. Most of the men were Canadians, natives of Charlotte County, N.B. Other places of residence include Albert, Charlotte, St. John, York, Carleton, and Kings counties in N.B.; Nova Scotia; Prince Edward Island; Ontario; United States of America (Maine); England; Ireland; Scotland; Newfoundland; Denmark; and Romania. A very few gave their nationality as Italian, Danish, Norwegian, Russian, or Syrian.

A few notations, such as "stopped by mother," "discharged," "wife objected" or "rejected," are recorded in the margins. Occasionally, the name of the recruiter -- H. V. Dewar, Herman G. Smith, or ? McDowell -- and the place of recuitment -- St. George, St. Andrews, Castalia -- are given. The entries are in several different hands.

On the record book's cover is printed "Hospital Admission & Discharge Book". The recruitment entries begin at the back of the book.

This fonds contains material related to the United Baptist Woman's Missionary Union, including an issue of their news publication "Tidings".

The items in this collection belonged to the St. Andrews branch of the New Brunswick Navy League, itself part of the larger Canadian Navy League. The purpose of the St. Andrews Navy League was to organize, manage, promote, and provide funding for a local Sea Cadet corps which they were a sponsor of, the #303 Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps “St. Croix”, formerly “St. Andrew” when it was first formed in 1987. The items in this collection provide information on how the St. Andrews Navy League would support their cadet corps and the different kinds of activities their Sea Cadet corps would participate in.

The different types of items include correspondence, either with people or organizations outside the Navy League or within the Navy League, programs and pamphlets meant to promote the Sea Cadet movement or specific Sea Cadet and Navy League events, documents related to St. Andrews Navy League meetings, including minutes, agendas, and supplementary notes, blank awards or certificates to recognize the contributions of Navy League members or Sea Cadets, documents on the history of the Navy League, documents which outline the internal policies of the Navy League organization, news items and announcements published for promotional purposes which were circulated in public newspapers or within the Navy League and Sea Cadets, documents related to training cadets, financial information, and documents which outline how the Navy League and the different events it would organize were structured.

A binder which contains a brief essay on the Royal West India Rangers regiment by Daniel F. Johnson of the Saint John branch of the New Brunswick Genealogical Society, articles on military settlers in New Brunswick, and lists of members of the Royal West India Rangers who were disbanded in New Brunswick. Inserted is a note: "it appears that many surnames on the Royal West India Rangers list are also Charlotte County names or perhaps have connections to them or to this area".

This fonds consists of the detailed minutes kept by Judge Forbes in civil and criminal trials. Included is material on juvenile court material, appeals from decisions of police magistrates, list of those to whom judge administered oath of allegiance, naturalization proceedings, and identification of grand and petty jurors, witnesses, and lawyers.

This fonds contains photocopies of 4 documents relating to the New Brunswick and Nova Scotia Land Company: reports nos. 1 and 2 of the state and condition of the province of New Brunswick with some observations on the company's tract laid before the Court of Directors of the Nova Scotia and New Brunswick Land Company by E. N. Kendall, commissioner, on 31 December 1835; sketch of the proposed town of Stanley now being erected and settled by the New Brunswick and Nova Scotia Land Company showing its present state, dated 11 October 1834; sketch plan with names of the occupiers of houses in the town of Stanley, those having taken lots and intending to build -- also the inhabitants of the houses dated 11 October 1837.
