Charles Frederick Allison fonds

This fonds consists of five series:

  • Series 1 : six scrapbooks, including mainly correspondence, bills, accounts and receipts of the Crane & Allison merchant and lumber business, and of the building of the Wesleyan Academy, Sackville, New Brunswick. The scrapbooks also include some Sackville Circuit records of the Wesleyan Methodist Church and Sackville School records. In addition, the fonds includes various correspondence regarding the establishment of the Wesleyan Academy and other business matters.
  • Series 2 : 11 letters; 9 from Enoch Wood, 1 from William Temple, and a copy of one from C.F. Allison to the Honorable A. Campbell, Member of Legislative Council, Nova Scotia.
  • Series 3 : Letter to C.F. Allison from Humphrey Pickard reporting on the progress of the Methodist Mission, 19 May 1846.
  • Series 4 : Letter to Rev. William Temple, Cahirman of the New Brunswick (School) District, from C.F. Allison, proposing the establishment of the Wesleyan Academy, 1839.
  • Series 5 : Letter to C.F. Allison from Cunard and Munn concerning the estate of William Crane and shipping business, 3 February 1854.

This collection contains documents belonging to Reverend Charles M. Smith of Rollingdam, New Brunswick, including both documents related to his research projects into local history as well as his duties as a Reverend. Documents related to these duties include marriage records for marriages performed by Charles Smith, and his notes and drafts for eulogies that were done at funeral services. Documents related to Charles Smith’s research projects include hand drawn and printed maps and drawings, published material and primary documents used by Charles Smith to support his research, and notes on church history, roadwork and early travel, local history, Charlotte County schools, and genealogical data. Also included are St. Croix Courier articles and essays written by Charles Smith, as well as the drafts for those items, and his correspondences, which include letters containing information related to his research and more personal letters.

Fonds consists of a school registry that includes the attendance, standards of instruction, and general standings of the pupils attending Coles Island School in District No. 8 in the Parish of Sackville, New Brunswick in the county of Westmorland. Also included is a Record of Visitation. This registry was prescribed by the Board of Education for the schools in New Brunswick.

Fonds consists of personal papers and also includes records belonging to Ethel Peake, some given to Smith or possibly borrowed or received following her death and used in his research for biographical note "Ethel Marguerite Peake, 1885-1954" (accession 8426). Peake files contain correspondence 1908-1943; biographical brochure [between 1923 and 1936]; clippings; Mount Allison Department of Music student records, 1936-1944 (students of Peake); photographs, including several of Peake; Allison G. Patterson file, 1951 and 1981.

This collection includes sketches by Ed McRoberts of St. Andrews, New Brunswick, including sketches for an international correspondence school program.

Edmund Hillyer Duval family

This fonds consists of personal records of Edmund Hillyer Duval and his children, namely, Marianne Duval, Amelia Duval, and Eliza Lury Duval Burditt and Lury's husband, William F. Burditt. There are also a very few records pertaining to Edmund H. Duval's work as an educator and member of Germain Street Baptist Church.

Edmund Hillyer Duval's records include manuscript copies of letters to various individuals relating to teachers' training (1848-1849); his estate papers; and a certificate of license to preach issued to him from Germain Street Baptist Church. Of particular interest are the materials pertaining to the descendants of Black Loyalists living at Loch Lomond or Willow Grove, near Saint John. These include a draft letter pertaining to the expenditure of funds for "ameliorating the condition" of blacks at Loch Lomond [1868], a memorandum of agreement for the construction of a meeting house at Willow Grove (1878), a brief account of the church's history, and a manuscript copy of a paper read at the opening of Willow Grove Church by Edmund H. Duval (1878).

Lury and William F. Burditt's and Marianne Duval's records each consist of a few pieces of correspondence. Of special interest are Amelia Duval's two dairies containing "scribblings" about her activities and interests. The 1900-[before 1907] volume records information on women's groups in Saint John, particularly the King's Daughters Society that worked with working-class girls and women in the port city.

Lastly, the fonds includes genealogy material on the Duval family, such as biographical notes and newspaper clippings.

This fonds contains two teacher's report to trustees, one for the Hampton district no.2 and the other for Hampton Ferry district no.3 from 1877, as well as a newspaper clipping of the living members of the 1924 graduating class from the Sussex Composite High School in 1974, the Journal of the House of Assembly of the Province of New Brunswick from the 6th of February 1851 to the 13th of April 1851 with the appendix on education detailing the schedule of warrants drawn in favor of Trustees of Parish Schools in 1850, as well as five school inspection returns in 1844.
