Administrative history

In 1855, the Militia Act provided for the raising of a voluntary, paid militia to act as the backbone of Canada's defense. Men were to attend training camps for 8 to 17 days annually and be prepared to be sent to areas of conflict. One of the militia units in Saint John, New Brunswick, between 1885 and the First World War, was the New Brunswick Brigade, which included garrison artillery.
