History

During the war of 1812, the British occupied Fort Sullivan on Moose Island in Passamaquoddy Bay located off Eastport, Maine, starting in 1814. After the war ended in 1815, the British claimed that Moose Island fell on the British side of the border separating the United States and the colony of New Brunswick. Following negotiations, the Americans relinquished their claims to several islands east of Moose Island, and the British, in turn, returned the Island to British control in 1818. The commander of the British garrison was Capt. R. Gibson.
