Biographical history

Melvin W. Chase is a retired Colonel of the United States Army from Concord, New Hampshire. Since 1960 him and his wife have visited the St. Stephen area to do genealogical research into Melvin W. Chase’s family. During his genealogical research he discovered that he was related on his mother’s side to the Young family of Oak Bay. In 1959 on an annual trip to Northern Maine he stopped at a cemetery in Ashland and found an inscription for a John C. Young of Oak Bay. The following summer he went to New Brunswick, and while visiting Young family relatives was shown a bible page listing the birth date of John C. Young.

These events spurred Melvin’s interest in researching the Young family line in order to compile a complete record of all the descendants of the first Jacob Young to arrive in North America. He would continue to visit New Brunswick for research purposes and would also visit relatives in other Canadian Provinces and throughout the U.S. to compile this record.

While doing research in the St. Croix Courier newspaper at St. Stephen, New Brunswick, Melvin Chase and his wife found it very difficult and time consuming to search for births, deaths, and marriages in the paper. They began cataloguing this information from past issues of the St. Croix Courier from 1865 onward to assist others in their future research. During this time Melvin Chase also prepared articles for publication in the St. Croix Courier on the history of the Oak Bay Youngs, which were published throughout 1978.
