Biographical history

Maria Aurelea Case (ca. 1837-1908) was born in Queens County, New Brunswick and married Thomas L. Hay (ca. 1828-1913) of Kings County in 1858. They had two children, John G. (b. ca .1859) and Rhoda E. (b. 1861) in Kings County.

Thomas Hay had been a carriage-builder in Springfield, N.B., around 1861 and sometime afterwards moved his family to Saint John, living first at 59 Waterloo Street and then at 41 Paddock Street. From 1871 to 1905, he was a dealer in hides, calfskins, sheepskins and wool in the Waterloo Street area. After 1891 he added potatoes, butter, eggs and oats to his stock.

The family were Calvinist Baptists. Maria Hay became a life member of the Woman's Baptist Missionary Union of New Brunswick (Saint John) in 1896. This organization was founded in Moncton in 1884 as an auxiliary of the Foreign Mission Board. In 1886, the by-laws were amended to include Home and Western Missions.
