Biographical history
The Lochhead family were pioneers from Perth County, Ontario. William Lochhead (1864-1927), taught biology at the Ontario Agricultural College and MacDonald College; his son Alan Grant Lochhead (1890-1980), received a Ph.D. from McGill in 1919 and became chief of the Bacteriology division, Dominion Department of Agriculture; grandson Kenneth Lochhead, is a well known Canadian artist, and grandson Douglas Lochhead is a poet, author, librarian, bibliographer and Professor Emeritus of Canadian Studies, at Mount Allison University.
Lillias Grant Lochhead was born 1 March 1865 in Windsor, Ontario. She married William Lochhead 14 August 1889 and devoted most of her life to her husband and family. She was a strong Canadian nationalist and monarchist, anti-Marxist and anti-Stalinist.
Helen Louise Van Wart was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick, 28 February 1893. She graduated from the University of New Brunswick with a BA degree in 1913 and studied piano and voice at the Leipzig Conservatory of Music. She married Grant Lochhead, 2 December 1919 and devoted her life to her family and the support of community musical activities, mainly in Ottawa, Ontario.

Fonds consists mainly of records generated by family relationships and Douglas Grant Lochhead's professional records. Fonds is arranged in six series: William and Lillias Lochhead, 1879-1949; Alan Grant and Helen Lochhead, 1913-1984; Douglas Grant Lochhead, 1939-1987; Kenneth C. Lochhead, 1930-1984; Articles and clippings; and photographs, predominantly of friends and family.
