Biographical history

Jonathan Sewell, son of Jonathan and Esther (Quincy) Sewall (Sewell), was baptized on 6 June 1766 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1774, following a patriot attack on the family home in Cambridge, the Sewalls moved to Boston and shortly thereafter to London, eventually settling in Bristol in 1778.

In 1785, after attending Brasenose College, Oxford, for a short time, Jonathan Sewell, Jr., left England with Attorney General Jonathan Bliss of New Brunswick to study law under the tutelage of an old family friend, Solicitor General Ward Chipman. By October 1787 Sewell had been appointed registrar of the Vice-Admiralty Court of New Brunswick, and, the following year, he was called to the New Brunswick bar. Two years later he moved to Quebec, where he furthered his career. Sewell died at Quebec on 11 November 1839.
