Name of creator
J. Chester MacRae was born in 1912 in Hopetown, Quebec. Early in his childhood, his family moved to Campbellton, New Brunswick.
In adulthood, MacRae was involved in military activities with army cadets, the militia and the Canadian army. He served with distinction in the Canadian army during the Second World War, receiving the Military Cross in 1944.
Following the war, he became principal and later proprietor of the Fredericton Business College (1945-1970). In 1957, he was first elected to Parliament as the Conservative member for York-Sunbury. He was re-elected five times, holding his seat in Parliament until 1972.
Scope and content
This fonds documents J. Chester MacRae's military, political and teaching careers.
It consists of three typescript volumes of informal memoirs prepared from diaries he kept. The volumes are rich in personal anecdotes of MacRae's activities and those of his friends and acquaintances.
The fonds also contains photocopies of formal documentation, photographs and newspaper clippings.
