St. John Pilot's Club, Minute book

This fonds contains the minute book of the St. John Pilot's Club for 1895-1897. There is also a scrapbook of press clippings about an inquiry into pilotage dues in the port of Saint John in 1895. The inquiry was held before Captain Smith and Captain Douglas.

Peruvian Congress (ship)

The fonds consists of documents prepared after the abandonment of the Peruvian Congress in1882. There is a protest or formal written declaration by the crew reporting the circumstances of the incident and a copy of the transactions subsequent to registry for evidence. The declaration was received and signed by William Henry D'Arcy Porter, notary public at Rangoon, Burma (now Myanmar). The protest provides detailed information on the events of the voyage with some names of crew, their titles, and the type of cargo on board. These documents are probably the copies sent back to New Brunswick for the information of the ship's owners.

There are also notebooks and notes of G.F. Matthew, W.D. Matthew, and Robert Matthew, 1846-1904; lecture notes of G. F. Matthew, 1880-1899; notes of William Diller Matthew, 1964-1971, and reports by Fritz Frech, B.F. Howell and Karl August von Mickwitz on geological topics. Also included are maps and photographic copies of maps of vicinity of Saint John and Newfoundland, 1841.

Fonds consists of four series comprised of records created and collected by family members documenting their involvement with the Presbyterian Church in general, St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Sackville, New Brunswick, in particular, and many volunteer organizations. Records included in series were mainly generated by Jeesie Elizabeth Craise's work as an active member of many Presbyterian Church organizations such as the Woman's Missionary Society, Ladies' Aid, Sunday School, Mission Band, many at local, regional and national levels and some records of work with UNICEF, Canadian Bible Society, and Red Cross.

The series include: Rev. Alexander Craise series consists of sermons, correspondence, some records related to churches in which he served; Jessie Elizabeth Craise series, 1915-1994, containing correspondence, certificates, awards, financial papers, and records of her project to document the history of Presbyterian Churches in the Atlantic region; and, M. Helen Craise Beale series, 1963-1994, consists of certificates, awards, correspondence and writings related to her father and the history of St. Andrew's, Sackville.

William J. Ritchie letters

The fonds consists of typed transcriptions of letters written by Ritchie to his mother while serving in the South Africa (Boer) War. The letters are dated 17 January 1900, 22 February 1900, and 28 February 1900 written from Belmont and Paardeberg Drift, South Africa. Letters describe William Ritchie's experience fighting the Boers in graphic detail and give information about the everyday life of a soldier in the Boer War. The letter dated 22 February vividly describes a charge on the Boers during which he received a superficial wound from shrapnel while under fire from 5 different points. Included in the letters are a few references to letters received from family members in Canada, receiving copies of Saint John newspapers and his comments about city councillors.

This fonds consists of a manuscript book by Walter White about his militia memories from 1884 to 1942. It makes reference to the contingent sent to the Boer War from Saint John and describes White's experiences during the Halifax Explosion.

Hazel Deinstadt Bell

Hazel Deinstadt Bell's reminiscences about growing up in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, and Saint John, New Brunswick, take the form of a letter to her great nieces and nephews, and were written in the 1950s. She recalls the introduction of the telephone, activities along the waterfront in Yarmouth, as well as street cars, hurdygurdies, trained bears, and Hallowe'en celebrations, in Saint John. She also mentions the Boer War (South African War), attending school, silent movies, outbreaks of smallpox, the exhibition, paddlewheel boats on the St. John River, and a visit to New York in 1901. She makes brief comments about her time overseas during World War I.

The fonds also includes a very few newspaper clippings containing information about her time in England and France, during World War I, and her father's career as a pastor in the Methodist Church.
