Ann (Haley) Berman

This series contains the papers of Ann (Haley) Berman including a scrapbook compiled by Ann with a detailed map of New Brunswick on the cover. Newspaper and magazine clippings collected in the scrapbook concern significant New Brunswick places and landmarks, people, and events from the 1940s. Some notable cut-outs include articles on Dochet, or St. Croix, Island, fires in St. George including a two-storey wooden frame 1800's house, customs officers at Upper Mills, lighthouse and fog stations in the Bay of Fundy and their keepers, the Home and School Association on Campobello, fishing in Blacks Harbour and other areas of the Bay of Fundy, and mysterious moose carcass near St. George. The scrapbook also contains clippings on the city of Saint John’s history, some of New Brunswick’s earliest settlers, famous families and individuals such as Lord Beaverbrook or Charles Saint Etienne de La Tour, New Brunswick hospitals and the Red Cross, hunting and fishing, and global events like post World War II talks between Britain, the U. S. and Russia.

The fonds consists of a record book for Zion Church, dated 1859 to 1865. The record book contains the minutes of monthly church meetings that include some names of those present. It documents the structure of the meetings and type of business conducted. An historical sketch of Zion Church, its endowments, rules of order and a confession of faith, are included in the book. There is also a membership list for August 1864 with names and street addresses.

Material related to court cases overseen by Charlotte County Justice of the Peace Peter M. Abbot. The different types of material include applications for insurance with some related financial documents attached, letters detailing complaints which have been brought before the Justice of the Peace, court proceedings with attached court summons and correspondence related to the cases attached, and a petition to the Legislature. Most of the material is related to debt cases in the Small Claims Court and includes affidavits, executions of debt, summons, and proceedings. Bills, account statements, receipts, and notes related to the debt cases are also often attached.

Saint John suspension bridge / William Murdoch

This fonds consists of a typed history of the Saint John suspension bridge with a copy of a photograph of the bridge. This history was previously published in the New Brunswick Historical Society Collections (No. 10, p. 104). There is information on early attempts to build a bridge across the harbour connecting the east and west sides of Saint John, including dates and names of the individuals involved in building the suspension bridge. There are technical details of the construction of this bridge as well as general discussion of suspension bridges including one in Wales and the first Brooklyn Bridge in New York. The report of the inspecting engineer, Alexander L. Light of St. Andrews, is included in this history. Names of stockholders of the Saint John Suspension Bride Company are provided as wel as a few details about bridge finances. Also included is an account of a violent storm that badly damaged the bridge in May 1858 and nearly caused a tragedy.
