Barry family

This fonds documents the legal career of Jeremiah Hayes Barry and sheds light on his family life, his personal activities, and the activities of his children.

It consists of more than 450 legal case files that contain correspondence and legal documents pertaining to property transactions, the settling of estates, civil suits, bankruptcies, agreements, and other matters. Legal records also include additional professional correspondence, a legal ledger (1887-1906), a journal pertaining to the Symonds & Burpee estate (1880-1891), office accounts, ledgers, and legal papers (1840s-1900s).

Personal records include correspondence relating to J. H. Barry's appointment to the Supreme Court, his personal correspondence, and materials relating to the Victoria Public Hospital, the University of New Brunswick, St. Francis Xavier University, St. Dunstan's parish (Roman Catholic) and St. Dunstan's school.

Family records include the correspondence of J. H. Barry, Isabella Barry, and the Barry children; household receipts; invoices; materials pertaining to the children's schooling (examinations, study notebooks on various subjects, grades); Charles Barry's lecture notes from Dalhousie law school; newspaper clippings; and photographs.

Edward Winslow

These two letters by Edward Winslow discuss a royal coat of arms, formerly in the Council Chamber in Boston, and removed, probably by Edward Winslow, at the time of the evacuation in 1776. Winslow authorizes Ward Chipman to give it to any worthy public room in Saint John. In 2003 the coat of arms hangs in Trinity Church, Saint John. The letters also discuss the politics of the new city of Saint John and the relative merits of Gabriel Ludlow and Elias Hardy as candidates for mayor.

Fairweather and Associates

This fonds consists of materials dealing with estates, investments and sales. It also includes records of insurance and debt collection. The files of E. C. Coster (1904-1905) include the estate of Bishop Binney. The files of H. A. Brittain (1906-1916) include the estates of the Binney, Hamilton, Odell, Coster and Bliss families. The files of J. H. Fairweather and P. R. L. Fairweather (1917-1919) include various estate files and the files of A. C. Fairweather and Sons, insurance agents (1919).

This fonds documents the professional and personal life of F. R. Sayer, including his career with the railways, his activities as a writer and lecturer, and his affiliations with a number of organizations and the Anglican Church.

William J. West

This fonds documents William J. West's career as a Judge of the Supreme Court of New Brunswick. It consists of more than 400 individual case files containing correspondence, judgments, notes, briefs, and other legal documents. The fonds also includes miscellaneous legal correspondence (1952-1967), lists of barristers, and dockets, as well as correspondence, speeches, and newspaper clippings relating to his political career.

Lastly, the fonds contains personal correspondence, personal legal records, genealogical notes on the West family, a transcript of an interview with William West, invitations to social functions, family photographs, newspaper clippings, and materials pertaining to riverboats and steamships on the St. John River.

William Wilkinson fonds

This fonds documents the personal and professional activities of William Wilkinson. It includes incoming and outgoing correspondence; insurance policies; and receipts, bills, invoices, agreements, bonds, and affidavits relating to legal cases he handled as either a lawyer or a judge.

Also included are case files dating to the years he practised law as well as legal documents pertaining to cases heard in the Supreme Court of New Brunswick or in the County Courts of Gloucester, Kent, Northumberland, Restigouche, Westmorland, or York.

A few letters and legal documents pre-date Wilkinson's birth. They probably resulted from the activities of his business associates, Archibald Murchie or John M. Johnson.
