St. Thomas University fonds

The fonds consists mainly of financial and administrative records for St. Thomas University and its predecessor institution, St. Thomas College. Financial records, including account books, ledgers, and bank books, 1910-1957. Administrative records include correspondence about the payment of tuition fees for students under programs of the Indian Affairs Branch, the Department of National Defence and the Department of Veterans' Affairs, 1949-1959, along with a listing of boarders and day scholars of St. Thomas College, 1910-1911, a copy of the constitution of the Students' Union of St. Thomas University, 1968-1969, a report entitled, "Residence Regulations - Men, St. Thomas University, Fredericton [1960s?], and a few other records.

Also included are printed brochures; souvenir programmes; biographical sketches of 11 priests (Rogers, Costello, Ploude, Reath, Pageau, Sheridan, Roach (2), Finnigan, Meader, and Pickett); a very few newspaper articles [1960s?]; and 4 photographs of building construction on the Fredericton campus.

There are also St. Thomas College / St. Thomas University calendars, dating from the 1911-1912 academic year to the 1985-1986 academic year, either in hard copy, on microfilm, or in both forms. Several years are missing in this run, more specifically, 1919-1920; 1920-1921; 1921-1922; 1924-1925; 1926-1927; 1928-1929; 1931-1932; and 1936-1937.

The fonds contains a few records relating to the university's student newspaper, "The Aquinian". There are 6 issues (originals) of "The Aquinian" (October, November, and December, 1964; February 1965; 13 February 1967; and 25 March 1968); several draft articles; an issue of "Nike", the newspaper's literary supplement (1965); and a few other records.

Student files, dating from 1914-1983, on microfilms F11808-F11812 are restricted. St. Thomas University faculty meeting minutes, 1967-1982, and St. Thomas University Senate minutes, 1968-3 June 1982, are available only on microfilm F11813.

William Brydone Jack

This fonds consists of an account book of personal and family expenses, 1847-1885, belonging to Dr. William Brydone Jack. There are also photostatic copies of a letter from Dr. Jack to Benjamin R. Stevenson, Surveyor General of New Brunswick concerning measurement of the meridian line through Fredericton, 14 October 1874. There is also a copy of a certificate of appreciation from the University of New Brunswick on his retirement in 1885.

Lord Beaverbrook Scholarships Committee

The fonds consists primarily of correspondence and applications for the Lord Beaverbrook scholarships. There are also minutes of the scholarship committee from 1920-1944 and a card index.

Raymond P. Gorham fonds

This fonds documents the professional career and personal activities of Raymond P. Gorham. It includes correspondence, biographical information, education memorabilia, photographs, maps, plans, pamphlets, and materials pertaining to the Cathedral Men's Club, the Natural History Society of New Brunswick, and the Canadian Society of Technical Agriculturalists.

The fonds also includes research materials, articles, essays, and papers on a variety of subjects -- entomology, science, Maritime pre-history, local history (University of New Brunswick, city of Fredericton, parish of Kingston, Kincardine settlement), ecclesiastical history (Anglican Church), and agricultural history. Gorham also compiled genealogical information on the Gorham, Allen, Fowler, Francis, Giles, Hoyt, Ingraham, Kierstead, Lyman, Lyon, Merritt, Murray, Paddock, Perkins, Perley, Prince, Raymond, and Paul families.

Lastly, the fonds contains a typescript copy of "The development of agricultural organization in Upper and Lower Canada during the period before Confederation," written by R. P. Gorham and dated May 1933.

The maps and plans have been transferred to the Map Section. The photographs are located in P118.

Fredericton Institution for the Education of the Deaf and Dumb

This fonds consists of a single bound volume of annual reports of the Fredericton Institution for the Education of the Deaf and Dumb, dating from 1886-1901. Reports are missing for the years 1884, 1889, and 1893. These annual reports give the names of managing committee members, officers, teachers, corresponding directors, subscribers, and parents, and provide information concerning funding and the students' progress. There are also reports prepared by the school superintendent and by the school physician.

A 1971 photograph of the Woodbridge House school building, on Woodbridge Street in Fredericton, is also included.

Rothesay Collegiate School fonds

This fonds consists of administrative and printed records of the Rothesay Collegiate School, now known as RCS Netherwood.

There are five student registers, covering the years 1891-1978, as well as issues of the school's magazine, "Blue and White," for most years between 1906-1981. Also include are photocopies of the Reverend W. R. Hibbard's and William Thompson's correspondence pertaining to the history of the school. The student registers are available on microfilm.

James Vroom

This fonds documents James Vroom's activities as an historian with a keen interest in the early history of New Brunswick, particularly that of Charlotte County. It also sheds light on his research activities and those of his friends and acquaintances, most notably W. O. Raymond, who were also interested in the history of the province.

The fonds consists of originals or transcriptions of letters, reports and other documents, dating to the late 18th and early 19th centuries, addressed to or written by prominent Loyalists, public officials and others, including Robert Pagan, Ward Chipman, John Jones, Sir Guy Carleton, Thomas Carleton, Governor Parr, Edward Winslow, Gillian Butler, Charles Morris, John Curry, and Bishop John Medley.

Also included are originals or transcriptions of documents relating to the Quakers that settled in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, the Fire Ward of St. Stephen (1852-1869), the by-laws of the St. Stephen Fire Department, the Passamaquoddy Indians, the Owen family of Campobello Island, the Botanical Club of Canada, the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts, imports at the port of St. Andrews, the public officials of Charlotte County, and the garrison at St. Andrews.

The fonds also contains a number of letters addressed to James Vroom, many from friends and acquaintances relating to research into various historical topics. There are also a number of articles, essays, or papers written by Vroom on historical and nature themes, including the history of freemasonry on the St. Croix, the War of 1812, indigenous flora, and the Penobscot Loyalists.

Also included are research notes on a number of subjects -- the Charlotte County Bank, the St. Stephen's Bank and Stagecoach Co., the clergy of the Church of England in Charlotte County, the postmasters of Charlotte County, local customs officials, benevolent societies, the St. Andrews Grammar School, the Charlotte County Agriculture and Immigration Society, the St. Andrews Savings Bank, the St. Andrews Chamber of Commerce, the St. Andrews Sunday School Society, the St. Andrews District Committee of the Society of Promoting Christian Knowledge, the St. Stephen Branch of the New Brunswick Auxiliary Bible Society, the Charlotte County Auxiliary Bible Society, the St. Andrews Ladies Association, other Bible Societies, the St. Andrews Marine Hospital, and the Commission of Buoys and Beacons.

Lastly the fonds includes scrapbooks of newspaper clippings, James Vroom's obituary, articles and publications by W. O. Raymond, and a few items pertaining to the Chipman Memorial Hospital, the St. Croix Tercentenary Committee, the Great War, and Christ Church (St. Stephen).

This fonds comprises 4 volumes of records -- 929, 930, 931, and 932. Only volumes 929, 930, and 931, described above, have been microfilmed.

Kate A. Stewart

This fonds consists of records relating to Katie A. Stewart's year as a student at the provincial Normal School in Fredericton. It includes an autograph book signed by many of her fellow students (1891-1892), notebooks relating to her study of natural science and teaching methods, and three textbooks -- Three Part Songs (by Henry Sefton, 1879), The Royal Reader (1875), and the Royal Reader (1877).

Students of Charlotte County Grammar School (St. Andrews)

The fonds consists of issues of Grammar School Times and Grammar School Review. There are 13 handwritten and illustrated issues of Grammar School Times, covering the period 25 September 1895 to 16 December 1895. They include community news, school news, and local advertisements, as well as comments on students' conduct (negative) and disciplinary actions.

The fonds also includes 8 issues of Grammar School Review, covering the period October 1935 to December 1935. They include current events, school news, and local advertisements. A column entitled "Old Graduates" provides information on activities and careers of former students of the Grammar School. Of particular interest, is the information, in several of these columns, on the careers of women graduates, who may be termed "new women" -- women who went on to study at universities / colleges and who had successful careers outside the home.
