Reid family

This fonds documents the personal activities of two generations of the Reid family. It reflects Ivan William Reid's wartime experiences, his acquisition of land under the aegis of the Soldier Settlement Board, Gladys' R. Reid's personal experiences, and Margaret Campbell Reid's financial difficulties in the wake of her husband's death.

The fonds contains personal correspondence, wartime notebooks (Ivan Reid), legal documents related to the acquisition of land, estate documents (William and Margaret Reid), financial records, photocopied diary (Gladys Reid), genealogical material, interviews with neighbours, and a hand-drawn map of the Norton-Bloomfield area.

This fonds documents J. Chester MacRae's military, political and teaching careers.

It consists of three typescript volumes of informal memoirs prepared from diaries he kept. The volumes are rich in personal anecdotes of MacRae's activities and those of his friends and acquaintances.

The fonds also contains photocopies of formal documentation, photographs and newspaper clippings.

David H. Walker

This fonds documents David H. Walker's 45-year literary career as author of 19 novels, over 100 short stories, and several works of non-fiction -- most notably, an autobiography, Lean, Wind, Lean. It also reflects his military career in The Black Watch (1931-47), including his internment in German prison camps during the Second World War. The fonds also includes material relating to Walker's family life, his personal relationships, his friendship with Lord Wavell, and his travels in Canada and abroad as well as several awards and honours.

It includes incoming and outgoing correspondence, notes, draft manuscripts, draft scripts, agreements with publishers and film makers, published short stories, reviews, royalty statements, and publicity material as well as copies of speeches, travel and family photographs, biographical material, mementos, and awards. Artifacts include: commission in The Black Watch, Governor-General's awards for fiction (1952 and 1953), and warrants making Walker a Member of the Order of the British Empire and a Member of the Order of Canada.

James H. Critchley

This fonds consists of 25 letters written by Lord Beaverbrook to James H. Critchley, 11 of which related to Critchley's work in selecting books for the UNB Law Library or pertain to his personal donations. Fourteen of the letters are personal notes from Beaverbrook in which he expresses concern over Critchley's health problems, thanks Critchley for gifts received, or sent with gifts for Critchley. Also included is a photocopy of a letter sent by Beaverbrook to J.H. Critchley's widow, Margaret, and son, Cyril, in which he described Critchley as an "intimate friend".

This fonds also includes a photograph of James Critchley as well as biographical information compiled by John Critchley.

Letter to Lord Hobart from Colonel Martin Hunter (later General Martin Hunter) dated 30 August 1803. Martin reports that he is ordered to New Brunswick "to raise a regiment" and asks if he may be appointed Governor of New Brunswick in place of Governor Thomas Carleton, whom he understands is to be returning to England.
