Charles G.D. Roberts

This fonds documents the literary career of poet and prose writer Charles G.D. Roberts, which spanned more than six decades. It also reflects his activities both as an editor and a promoter of Canadian literature and Canadian writers. In addition, the fonds sheds light on his family life, his travels abroad, his years in the British and Canadian armies, his work with the Canadian Authors' Association, his financial difficulties, and his personal relationships. It also provides information about the literary careers of other members of the Roberts family, most notably, Theodore Goodridge Roberts and Lloyd Roberts.

It contains correspondence, a family scrapbook, Roberts's notebook, and holograph and typescript poems, stories and essays by Roberts, Bliss Carman and other writers. The fonds also includes copies of published poems, essays and stories by Charles G.D. Roberts, Bliss Carman, Theodore Goodridge Roberts, Lloyd Roberts, and Dorothy Roberts Leisner as well as published articles about Charles G.D. Roberts and other members of the Roberts family.

The Collected Poems of Sir Charles G.D. Roberts

This fonds documents the activities of Desmond Pacey and his colleagues which resulted in the production of a scholarly volume of collected poems by Charles G.D. Roberts. It contains photocopies of typescript, holograph or published versions of 382 poems by Roberts, many having first appeared in newspapers, magazines, anthologies or in one of his books of verse. The fonds also includes index cards which contain the title and publishing history of each work, research notes and literary comments. Typescript manuscripts, project correspondence, research files and an overview of the poetry project are included.

The bulk of this fonds documents the literary career of John Reade. It includes correspondence and manuscripts, as well as newspaper clippings and scrapbooks of Reade's poems, certificates of John Reade's ordination (as a deacon and as a priest), affidavits, and biographical articles. Several letters are from Charles G D Roberts (1885) and Archibald Lampman (1889); there is also correspondence from F R Robinson regarding John Reade's leaving the ministry.

This fonds also contains correspondence addressed to and written by individuals other than John Reade, some of which is on a religious theme. Personal items include Annie Reade's diplomas, Mary Reade's will, Reade family photographs and an autograph book inscribed to John Reade from George Sully

The collection consists of correspondence and records, mainly related to Crawford's involvement with various arts clubs and societies and their exhibitions. The correspondence, primarily with the Maritime Art Association, deals particularly with exhibitions. Many letters mention the effects of the Second World War on art exhibits. There is also some correspondence relating to "Martime Art : A Canadian Art Magazine" which was launched in October 1941. The Maritime Art Association records include information on annual exhibits. There are lists of exhibitors names and addresses, titles of work and prices. There is also a typed copy of a brief presented to the Royal Commission on National Development of the Arts, Letters and Sciences (Massey Commission, 1949) along with various other reports, and minutes of annual meetings.

The Saint John Art Club material includes copies of the regulations for picture loans with lists of borrowers on the reverse side. There are reports on art club activities, Julia's notes regarding establishing an art gallery, and information on the Toronto Art Gallery exhibit including works by Saint John artists Jack Humphrey and Dorothy Currie. There are membership lists with addresses and minutes of monthly meetings. Some business and financial papers are also included. There are class lists for both junior and senior art classes, given by the Saint John Art Club from 1916 to1920, with names of instructors and students and two rolls of Art Club officers for 1919 and 1920. There is also material related to the Federation of Canadian Artists and other art groups. Material related to the 1941 British Children's Art Exhibit includes aspeech by Mayor Wasson on CHSJ radio appealling for the public support of a sale of artwork by British children in aid of air raid victims.

Margaret Duncan Borden fonds

Fonds consists of a newspaper clippings about First Presbyterian Church in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, a list of writing titles and a numbered series of correspondence and stories that were created by Margaret Duncan Borden. When between 70 and 75 years of age, Borden wrote a series of forty short stories, reminiscences and letters. She typed a number of carbon copies and sent them from her home in Oklahoma to her grandchildren, including those in Little Shemogue, New Brunswick. Some of the recollections refer to Little Shemogue and Borden’s childhood experiences there, including information about prominent Covenanter families in the community; others relate incidents later in her life, as wife and mother, raising a family with her clergyman husband. Some of the stories indicate date and place of origin, some do not.

Fonds consists of personal, biographical and family documents, citations, certificates, invitations, programmes, correspondence, war and political activities, radio and publishing ventures, speeches and addresses, sculpture projects as well as photographs, negatives, positives and reproductions. These are accompanied by scrapbooks containing clippings concerning a tour by the U.S. for Belgium Relief Committee, exhibitions of her works, speaking engagements and an audio tape cassette "The Communist Conspiracy", 1966. The contents of the fonds document the varied interests and achievements of this woman noted for her support of Belgian war efforts during the First and Second World Wars. This was followed by a career as spokesperson for Republican and conservative values in the United States through seeking public office, lectures tours and assisting with the creation of new political parties. Her main focus was on the creation of artworks and teaching and sharing her talents via lecture tours. Many noted individuals were sculpted and immortalized at the hands of Suzanne Silvercruys.
