Donald Logan collection

This collection consists of records relating to the donor's father Herbert L. Logan, a militia officer and veteran of World War I and World War II, along with records the donor collected pertaining to his interests, notably World War I, World War II, the Moncton Hawks hockey team, the Loyal True Blue Association, John M. Brown's general store at Quaco, N.B., businesses of Albert, Westmorland, and Saint John counties, and the steamboats "St. George" and "John Ward".

Records pertaining to Herbert L. Logan and the First and Second World Wars include circulars, telegrams, and photographs relating to the New Brunswick Rangers; messages and orders from commanding officers relating to the 7th Field Hygiene Section of the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps; a postcard of the 7th Field Hygiene Section; identification cards, permits, tickets, shoulder patches, and military buttons; propaganda leaflets dropped by the R.C.A.F. over Germany in German (1930s); handbooks and booklets; the constitution of the Canadian Legion of the British Empire Service League [191-] and other material pertaining to the Canadian Legion; and newspaper clippings.

Records pertaining to the Moncton Hawks include photographs and postcards; a souvenir history of the Moncton Hawks, Allan Cup Champions, 1932-1934; a printed copy of "The Hawk Song" (1933); hockey programme (1948); a hockey schedule (1940s); and a small commemorative booklet containing photographs of the Moncton Hawks Maritime Champions, 1932-1933.

The collection also includes the constitution and 3 membership booklets relating to the Loyal True Blue Association that functioned at Youngs Cove, Queens County, in the 1920s and 1930s; a general store account book for John M. Brown's general store at Quaco, N.B., (1877-1880); accounts relating to the steamboat St. George and the steamer John Ward (1830s); the Intercolonial Railway Time Table of Trains conveying Their Royal Highnesses, the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York from Saint John to Halifax, 1901; an English Speaking Citizens Committee of Moncton "reply to French propaganda," issued in 1934 to counter two circulars reportedly broadcast in Moncton and area by the Assomption Society of Moncton; and commercial advertising leaflets, letterheads, bills of sale and accounts pertaining to businesses in Albert, Westmorland, and Saint John counties. Of particular interest is an announcement issued by T. H. Estabrooks, of Saint John, of the launch of the "Estabrooks' Red Rose Coffee", [1901?].

This fonds consists of photocopies of letters and other documents including: Letters from George Stracey Smyth to John Gee Smyth about family matters, 1814-1822; letter from the Duke of Kent, 1819; the will of G.S. Smyth and papers relating to his estate, 1823-1824; a printed copy of A Sermon preached in Christ Church, Fredericton, April 6 1823, the day after the funeral of his Excellency Major-General George Stracey Smyth …; and The fourth annual report of the state of the Madras school in New Brunswick, Saint John, 1823.

Smyth's correspondence reveals his interest in music and in schools, especially a school for black children (the African School within the Madras system). It also includes details of a dispute between Christ Church, Fredericton (St. Anne's) and Dr. Alexander Boyle (1771-1854), Smyth's executor, over an organ Smyth had bequeathed.

W. Cabot World War II Letter

This letter was written to W. Cabot, of Dalhousie, New Brunswick, by Group Captain, W. V. McCarthy, Chief Chaplain, R.C., R.C.A.F. Overseas at Overseas Headquarters, 20 Lincoln's Inn Fields, London, on 1 November 1943. McCarthy offers Cabot his condolences on the death of his son, Joseph, and provides details of Joseph's funeral and burial in Dumfries. He assures the bereaved father that Joseph was buried with "the full rites of Holy Mother the Church" alongside his comrades.

These 5 army (field service) correspondence books relate to Capt. C. F. Inches's tour of duty in France, in 1916, with the 1st Canadian Heavy Battery. He records information about his routine administration duties, while also providing information about ammunition, equipment, weapons, horses, the awarding of honours and medals, charges of insolence and desertion, military court martials, attack plans, activities at the Front, and feats of gallantry. A number of names of officers and enlisted men are included. The correspondence book dating from June to July 1916 (MS1A) contains a few letters written or signed by Lt.-Col. C. G. Pritchard, R.G.A.

The fonds consists of militia service rolls for the years 1893, 1896, 1900 and 1912 for Westmorland County. The service rolls for the years 1893, 1896, and 1912 include the recruits' age, place of residence, and date of enlistment. The 1900 roll is incomplete and provides only the men's names and corresponding rank.

The fonds also contains photocopies of issues of "The 8th Hussar" newsletter, published weekly by the 8th Princess Louise (NB) Hussars (Vol. 1, #1, 26 August 1945 – Vol. 1, #14, 24 November 1945 inclusive).

The fonds consists of three notebooks containing engineering data recorded while C. F. Camber was working in the vicinity of Woodstock, N.B., in 1938. They include figures, notes, and sketches relating to excavations and embankment, railways, a roadway, ditches, canals, and other projects.

A roll of oversized plans, tracings, and graphs was transferred to the Map Section.
