Young, George

Pickett family

This collection consists of the family and business records of the Pickett family. It includes records of the county treasurer of Kings County from 1792 to 1860, records of David Pickett, Sr. as justice of the peace, 1804-1822, and records of Trinity Church, Kingston, for scattered dates between 1807 and 1899.

The diaries of Justus Pickett, 1854-1914, contain mainly financial records, some dealing with the family sawmill. There are also accounts for the fulling mills, both in Canada and the United States, 1770-1838. The family papers include correspondence, legal documents and land records. A service register for St. Paul's Anglican Church, Oak Point, New Brunswick for 1886-1895 is also included.

A collection of ships logs and other papers belonging to George H. Burpee and his family includes logs for the "S.S. Prince Arthur," "S.S. David Weston," "S.S. Majestic," "S.S. Pokanoket," the "Ada G." and "Champion" for dates between 1891 and 1913. There are also a number of photographs of steam vessels on the St. John River.

The collection also includes microfilm copies of correspondence of the Rev. Ebenezer Dibblee and a microfilm copy of his History of Stamford, Connecticut, both on microfilm no. F7314.

Sterling A. Limerick fonds

This fonds documents the life, work, and social activities of Sterling Alexander Limerick, of Fredericton, N.B., primarily through his personal diaries, 1914-1964. There are also 2 scrapbooks of newspaper clippings (1917-1963), loose newspaper clippings (1906-1963), 35 photographs and postcards, certificates of membership issued to Sterling A. Limerick by Hiram Lodge No. 6 and Neill's Quarter Century Club, printed material, and a single artefact.

Sterling A. Limerick's personal diaries begin in 1914, when he was 23-years-old, and run consecutively to 1964, a few months before his death, aged 73 years. There are 2 diaries each for 1922 and 1935, and a 5-year diary, for 1945-1949, that overlaps with individual diaries for these years. The brief entries document Sterling Limerick's lengthy career in retail with James S. Neill & Sons, his social activities with family and friends, and community events and newsworthy happenings, such as fires, floods, court cases, criminal activity, elections, parades, celebrations, exhibitions, sporting events (particularly men's and women's hockey, baseball, horse racing, and curling), marriages, and deaths.

Entries recorded during World War I note specific events, such as the declaration of war (August 4), the sinking of the Lusitania (May 1915), fundraising efforts, recruitment drives, and the departure of troops for the Front. His diaries for the 1930s offer little comment on the effects of the Great Depression on Fredericton's economy or its residents. He does note, however, that his wages were reduced several times during that decade, and he includes details of the preparations made for the visit of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth to Fredericton in 1939. During World War II, he records a limited amount of information about the war effort, most notably, the outbreak of the war, the launch or results of a few key offensives, the declaration of the armistice, and the return of soldiers.

The scrapbooks and loose newspaper clippings contain information about Fredericton social events, local fires, floods, court cases (including the Hamilton murder of Burgoyne, 1949), sports, election results, The Royal Visit of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (1939), the Limerick family and extended family, the masonic lodge, the shriners, marriages, and deaths among other matters.

Included among the photographs are 2 studio portraits of Sterling A. Limerick, photographs of his brothers and other family members, snaps taken of him with his friends while on automobile trips (1914), a single photo of 4 women sitting in an early model automobile (ca. 1914), mock wedding photos in which members of the Algonquin Club probably participated, and several group photos of Sterling Limerick with fellow curlers taken at curling bonspiels. There are also 4 postcards, 3 pertaining to the Algonquin Club and 1 of an automobile decorated for a parade [ca. 1920?].

Printed material includes the city of Fredericton's official programme for the celebration of the coronation of His Majesty King Edward VII, August 9th, 1902; a programme for several activities at the Arctic Rink; 2 dinner menus for banquets held by the Fredericton Curling Club to celebrate its 100th anniversary (1954); A tribute to D. Leo Dolan (booklet), January 1950 (31 pp.); and an advertising flyer for a 4-act, comedy drama entitled, "The Doctor’s Private Secretary,” held at the Opera House, and sponsored by the Fredericton Tennis Club, [19-].

Also included is a single artefact -- a small, wooden curling "stone" commemorating the Fredericton Curling Club's 100th anniversary, 1854-1954.

Limerick, Sterling Alexander

Hugh B. Hay fonds

This fonds consists of appointment diaries in which Dr. Hugh B. Hay recorded his patients' names, the reasons for their calls, and the amount to be charged for services. There are volumes for 1914 and 1931-1941. It is unclear who continued to make entries in the volumes for 1940 and 1941 after Dr. Hay's death. Possibly, they were used by a family member or by the individual who was responsible for settling Hay's business affairs. A number of entries in the 1941 appointment diary deal with payment of bills, accounts, rent, mortgages, and notes, and other business transactions.

A receipt for goods purchased by Dr. Hay from M. Kane, a statement of account owing to H. B. Hay from [William] Brock, and a promissory note for $30.00 signed by Gordon and Arthur Miller in favour of H. B. Hay are also included.

Benjamin Marston letter

This letter describes the timber surveyed by Benjamin Marston on a journey between St. Ann's (Fredericton) and St. Andrews, New Brunswick in March 1785. Marston discusses the process of identifying trees for use by the British navy.

Nashwaak Bicentennial Association

This fonds consists of the administrative records of the Nashwaak Bicentennial Association and the research materials (primarily photocopied) collected in connection with the publication of "And the River Rolled On." Administrative records include correspondence, minutes of meeting, press releases, newspaper clippings, newsletters, and other material relating specifically to the work of the Bicentennial Association in connection with the production of its book, the organization of the Homecoming Week, and the creation of a brochure.

Research materials include notes, photocopies or transcriptions of documents, and other records used in writing the text of "And the River Rolled On." There are copies of agreements, deeds, wills, land grants, diaries, school returns, songs, poems (including one each by Martin Butler and Theodore Goodridge Roberts), and sketches of houses, as well as scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, maps, photographs, sporting guides, a listing of English immigrant children, and copies of addresses, talks, articles, or essays on early Nashwaak history, Nashwaak residents, their communities, institutions, industries, railways, and local events.

Research notes relate to a variety of historical topics, notably, land granting, the 42nd Royal Highland Regiment (Black Watch), the construction and functioning of local schools, the establishment of churches, family genealogies, growing-up, historical buildings, business and manufacturing establishments, community leaders and pioneers, and the Nashwaak River system.

Nashwaak Bicentennial Association (York County, N.B.)

William F. Burditt family

The fonds consists largely of family correspondence, with some business and professional records belonging to William F. Burditt. Family correspondence includes letters addressed to William F. Burditt; his wife Lury; their sons and daughters, William, Jr., Arthur F., and Mary Louise (May); William, Sr.'s father, Thomas, his brothers, John F. and Frank, and his sisters, Nellie and Anna Mary. There are also a few records relating to William F., Sr.'s daughter, Edith C. Burditt, as well as family photographs, genealogical records, and records of personal and household expenditures (1892-1904).

Business and professional records include William F. Burditt's correspondence with various companies for the years 1879-1929, his record of accounts with Arthur P. Tippet & Co., diaries of work performed at his farm, and a notebook containing information on a variety of subjects. There are also a printed copy of a paper he read before the St. John City and County Good Roads Association; newspaper clippings on subjects, such as town planning, trade and industry, taxation, immigration, exhibitions, and the Farmers' Club; legal documents, including his estate records and a patent issued to him for a trip mechanism for harvester rakes; and a printed prospectus of the St. John Window Glass Company. Lastly, the fonds contains research materials and essays, including 2 brief histories of St. Martins and Mollie Smith's recollection of East Saint John.

J. Leonard O'Brien

This fonds documents the business activities, political career, and personal life of Joseph Leonard O'Brien.

Records relating to his years in provincial politics include correspondence, notes from his diaries, political scrapbooks, and materials relating to election campaigns and his position as Speaker of the House of Assembly. Federal political records include correspondence, copies of speeches, scrapbooks, photo albums, and materials pertaining to election campaigns and the Progressive-Conservative Association (letters, memos, minutes, briefs). A few of the political records pertain to his father, John O'Brien, who was a member of the House of Assembly for New Brunswick.

Records from J. Leonard O'Brien's years as Lieutenant-Governor of New Brunswick include official and private correspondence, speeches, invitations to various events, thank-you and congratulatory cards, scrapbooks, photo albums, guest books from Government House (1858-1965), an honorary degree, and materials pertaining to royal visits (1950s), the Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem, and the Order of Malta.

Business records include correspondence, financial records, account books, day books, ledgers, agreements, court records, and other material pertaining to O'Brien Limited; correspondence, minutes of board of directors meetings, financial records, agreements, inventories, reports, payroll records, purchase records, account books, ledgers, cash books, sales books, vouchers, invoices, and receipts pertaining to Chatham Industries Limited; correspondence, financial papers, inventories, purchase invoices, sale invoices, and loading orders for Trafalgar Mills Ltd.; and correspondence, financial records, agreements, a copy of the letters patent, a ledger, and reports regarding Plaswood Corporation of Canada. Business records dating to the years prior to 1917 relate to John O'Brien's business activities.

Also included are financial records, correspondence, invoices, account books, general ledgers, and inventories relating to the O'Brien Store; correspondence financial records, and an agreement pertaining to Miramichi Concrete Products Co.; and correspondence, financial records, and guests lists for the Big Hole Salmon Fishing Club, Limited, which was incorporated in 1907 with its heading office in Hillsborough, Albert County; New Brunswick. J. Leonard O'Brien was probably a director or a shareholder or both of this company.

Lastly, the fonds contains his personal records including general and family correspondence; documents pertaining to the O'Brien and McPeake family histories; financial records and photographs; a few records relating to the North West Boom Co., the South West Boom Co., Atlantic Sugar Refineries Ltd., Acadia Pulp and Paper Ltd., Bank of Nova Scotia, and J. McPeake O'Brien Store; documents pertain to the estate of Kathleen O'Brien; and documents and printed material pertaining to a number of associations, clubs, and universities including Canadian Red Cross Society, Boy Scouts of Canada, University of New Brunswick, Université de Moncton, St. Thomas University, and Mount Allison University.

A number of maps showing mineral occurrences, mining claims, the location and extent of Chatham Industries Limited lands, various hydro electric projects, and other areas of the province have been moved to the Map Section. Oversized records also have been moved to the Map Section. Loose photographs have been transferred to the Photograph Section. There are also several lithographs of Fredericton and area dating to the 1830s.

O'Brien, Joseph Leonard

James Brown

The two major components of this collection are diaries, 1813-1816, 1838-1842, 1855-1870, and correspondence, 1838-1869. There are also speeches, easy and poetry written by James Brown, and a number of documents relating to his political career.

The diaries were kept primarily as a record of work. The first diary shows an established pattern. He described the weather, work done, with whom and for whom, money received or spent, trips, some personal comments. If he made a major change in his work, he was likely to begin a new diary. When he went to work in Maine for a few months in 1816, he mentions keeping a diary there, but reverted to his old diary on his return to Charlotte County.

The diaries of 1838, 1844 and 1855, cover periods of time spent on work assigned by the New Brunswick government -- as supervisor of roads and bridges and as a commissioner to examine the schools -- and are detailed enough to form a basis for official reports. However, Brown had no particular aversion to including personal matters or general observations and all of these diaries contain much that would not appear in his final reports.

In 1856, he resolved to keep a diary on a more regular and unified basis. At the same time he explained his method of making brief notes as he went about his daily tasks and then writing the in his diary as he found leisure to do so. From this time his activates as a politician, family man and farmer were recorded in the same diary.

References to farming can be found throughout the diaries and letters. The diary of 1863-1870, describes daily work on land that Brown cleared fifty years earlier. Some of his theories on agriculture can be found in a speech to the Charlotte County Agricultural Society (MS7/2); and in sections of A Report on Agriculture in New Brunswick by Johnson.

Correspondence, 1838-1869, includes letters to and from Brown, his family, friends, constituents and members of the government. Many contain both personal & political or official matters. For this reason, and because it is useful to use the letters in conjunction with the relevant diary entry, they have been arranged in a straight chronological order.

The number of family letters is relatively small but they do provide a vivid picture of Brown and his family. Most of these letters are from the period of his second marriage to Catherine Cameron.

The correspondence of January-March 1861, contains a number of letters to Brown as Surveyor General and his replies, and give an idea of the variety of issues encountered in that office.

The correspondence of August 1861-June 1862, covers James Brown's trip to England, Ireland, and Scotland. Many friends in New Brunswick gave him letters of introduction and asked him to call on relatives in the old country. A number of these letters give insight into how New Brunswick was promoted to potential immigrants. A few letters dating to this period were written by James Brown's son, John C. Brown, who accompanied him on the trip, to family and friends in New Brunswick.
