Saint John Jewish Historical Society

As an organizational history, the records are nearly complete and include the constitution, correspondence, reports, financial records, membership, and documentation of activities and events from 1986 to the present. Three publications – From Our Grandmothers Kitchens (cookbook - 1989), Weaving the Past Into the Present (history – 1989 and 2008) and The History of the Saint John Jewish Community (video – 1990 and 2008) have been produced by the museum. Museum's activities have also been well documented through scrapbooks and photograph albums from 1986 through the present time.

The extent of archival material on each of the organizations varies from only a few sheets to many folders or boxes. Many records suffered the same fate as many of the Synagogue records, being burned in a fire in 1933.

  • Daughters of Israel - minute books, financial ledgers, some reports and clippings.

  • Hebrew Choral Society - sheet music in English, Hebrew, and Yiddish.
  • Shomer Club (The Guardians) - financial records, minutes, and correspondence
  • Henrietta Szold Chapter of Hadassah-WIZO - minutes, reports, financial records, correspondence, membership, conference material, activity reports, and scrapbooks
  • Ezra Lodge Habonim - minute books, membership records, correspondence, and dinner programs
  • State of Israel Bonds - correspondence, dinner programs and bond certificates

Jewish organizations of New Brunswick

Flat Earth Society of Canada

"This fonds documents the activities of The Flat Earth Society of Canada (later The Flat Earth Society) from its birth in November 1970 until its demise in the mid-1980s. More specifically, it highlights Leo Ferrari's role as the society's spokesperson and long-serving president.

The fonds includes correspondence, notes, membership records, financial records, newspaper clippings, photographs, cartoons, audio cassette recording of Ferrari speaking about the FES, and VHS videotape of "In Search of the Edge." In addition, it contains copies of newsletters ("The Official Chronical" and "The Official Organ"), tractates, and drafts of speeches as well as draft and published copies of articles about the society and its members.

The fonds also includes an unpublished manuscript "The Earth is Flat! An Exposé on the Globularist Hoax" and a published copy of Ferrari's more scholarly article "Feminism and Education in a Flat Earth Perspective" (McGill Journal of Education). Artifacts include a smashed globe, maps of the world in various shapes, framed membership certificates, and a wooden gnome holding the sign "Repent! the Edge is Nigh."

Fredericton Art Club

This fonds consists largely of thank you notes received by the Fredericton Art Club from Lord and Lady Beaverbrook and/or his second wife, the former Lady Dunn, for gifts or greetings sent. Secretaries or other agents of the Beaverbrook family wrote a few letters on behalf of the family. The fonds also includes drafts of some of the letters written by the club to the Beaverbrook family.

Also included are the replies the Club received from Lord Beaverbrook and/or his wife, and from Harriet Irving and Olymbia Kedros respecting invitations to special events. Of particular interest is a handwritten copy of a tribute to Lord Beaverbrook.

This fonds consists primarily of the administrative records of the New Brunswick Teachers' Association. It includes minutes of the NBTA Executive Committee meetings (1919-1968), of the NBTA Annual General meetings (1922-1978), and of the NBTA and New Brunswick Teachers' Federation Board of Directors and Executive Committee meetings (1969-1977).There are also copies of reports and briefs (1958-1966); a partial membership list (1919-1920); and copies of several publications, including "Association Activities" (1971), "Nouvelles NBTA/NBTA News" (1969-1971, 1996), "NBTA Newsletter" (1963-1966), "Educational Review" (1889-1970), "Manuel de la NBTA" (1967), and the Association Subject Council publications (1967-1983).

Also included is a copy of Eric D. MacKenzie's 1971 UNB master of education thesis, "The Historical Development of the New Brunswick Teachers' Association" and a copy of A. M. Anderson's 1946 essay, "A History of the New Brunswick Teachers' Association."

Maternal Association of Milltown St. Stephen fonds

This fonds consists of a minute book which contains minutes of meetings of the Maternal Association of Milltown St. Stephen, as well as lists of members and their children and a copy of the constitution.

A number of pages have been removed from the book. The final entry, dated 1879, concerns the death of an unnamed woman.

John Ullock

This collection was compiled by John Ullock and reflects his research interests. It consists of his histories of freemasonry on the Miramichi (photocopy) and of the Rankin-Hutchinson house (microfilm); photocopies of excerpts from books on the histories of Halifax and the railways; and a photocopy of Helen E. Anstiss's essay on Sir Samuel Cunard.

Also included are originals or photocopies and a microfilm copy of 3 issues of the monthly newspaper, "The Cariboo Courier" (March, May, and July, 1872), as well as a photocopy of the periodical, "The Blue Banner" (June 1925), published in the interests of church union in New Brunswick. There are also notes on the genealogy of the Ullock family and one lithograph each of two pen and ink sketches of buildings located near the corner of Water and George streets in Chatham.

Many of the photographs in the collection depict wharves located in New Brunswick communities, including Neguac, Lower Newcastle, Tabusintac, Mills Point, Loggieville, Oak Point, and Black Brook. There are also photos of the Chatham post office, of sailing ships, and of the beach at Richibucto. The photographs have been moved to the Photograph Section (P284).

Ullock, John

New Brunswick Agricultural Societies

This fonds includes correspondence (mostly of the New Brunswick Society for the Encouragement of Agriculture, Home Manufactures and Commerce), 1850-1854, 1858, 1868, 1871, 1882-1900, and later with the Director of Agricultural Societies, 1961, 1969-1971; Schedules of Awards (and prize lists for fairs and exhibitions), lists of subscribers, Annual Returns, receipts for purchases and work performed for the individual Societies; 1874-1875 etc. and for the provincial Society (including Matthew Stead's receipts for work on the Exhibition buildings (1850s), (Printed) Minutes of the New Brunswick Society for the Encouragement of Agriculture, Home Manufactures and Commerce, 1850-1854 and handbills from various agricultural societies.

For the most part, this fonds consists of individual documents, but does include minute books for the following Agricultural Societies: Blackville and Derby, 1889-1944; Black River, 1953-1992; Gloucester County, 1848-1852; Loggieville, 1936-1945; Northumberland County, 1960-1970; Salmon Beach, 1919-1982; St. Hilaire, 1875-1976; and York County, 1841-1863.

Lastly, it includes one ledger of the New Brunswick Agricultural Societies United, 1955-1973, and the letters patent incorporating "The Agricultural Society of District Number Ninety" (Chipman parish, Queen's County, and Northfield parish, Sunbury County) in 1909.
