Pierce family

This fonds documents the business and personal activities of the Pierce family, particularly those of James A. Pierce and James J. Pierce.

It includes general business correspondence, letters to the editor, family correspondence, school inspector correspondence, personal accounts, invoices, petitions, reports of ratepayers' meetings, recommendations for appointments of school trustees, receipts for subscriptions to the Gleaner and Northumberland Schediasma, poems, a prospectus for The Northern Star, and two scrapbooks of newspaper clippings concerning politics.

James Brown

This fonds consists of correspondence to James Brown, mostly concerning his constituency, 1840 - 1866; petitions to Sir William Colebrook, the Lieutenant Governor, mainly from residents of Charlotte County, 1842 - 1866, and a few miscellaneous printed items.

Correspondence with Charlotte County residents is primarily concerned with constituency matters including grants of money to construct bridges, to establish a monthly agricultural periodical, for pensions for widows of Revolutionary soldiers, and for land. Petitions to Colebrook from Charlotte County residents deal with such issues as pensions for Revolutionary soldiers and remuneration for teaching school.

This fonds contains mostly correspondence, articles, newspaper clippings, and exhibition catalogues relating to Pegi Nicol MacLeod, Canadian artist and long-time friend of Madge Smith. This fonds also contains 70 photographs taken by Smith during the late 1930s. Subjects of these photographs include places, such as the Fredericton Golf Course and the Oromocto Flats; winter scenes; and animals, such as horses and cats.

Edward Augustus, Duke of Kent and Strathern

This collection documents the Duke's military activities at Gibraltar, Canada, and the West Indies. The majority of the correspondence is between Prince Edward and Colonel, later General, William Edmeston, however, there are a few letters to Edmeston from other military officers and administrators including I. Hale, G. Smyth, John Montrifor, G.H. Charlton, I.A. Vesey, and Lieutenant Colonel Scott. The letters were written from various locations: Gibraltar, Quebec, Halifax, St. Helen's, Hilsea, London, and Antrim and discuss the 50th Regiment of Foot and the Royal Fusiliers. The collection also contains two separate lists containing the names, age and height of soldiers transferred between the 50th Regiment of Foot and the Royal Fusiliers, one is dated 20 May 1791 and the other is undated; a three-page account, dated 11 April 1793, detailing a plot planned by four soldiers from the Royal Fusiliers to murder Prince Edward; and a copy of a four-page narrative, written on 20 February 1798, giving details of the battle fought by the Grenadiers of the 40th Regiment when the islands of Martinique, Grenada, St. Vincent, St. Lucia, and Tobago were taken during the Seven Years War.

This fonds consists of six state letters between Right Honorable Lord Stanley, Colonial Secretary, and Lieutenant Governor Sir William Colebrook, 1843 - 1845. Some of these letters are regarding the Imperial Acts for the protection of copyright in books and provincial post office establishment for the province of New Brunswick. There is also one letter, dated 1 October 1845, that includes an extract of a report from the Earl of Lonsdale to the Lords Commissioners of Her Majesty's Treasury dated 14 August 1845.
