Read Stone Company Fond

First accession contains items from six plywood boards used in the Grindstone Museum set up by Herbert C. Read in the “Carriage House” of the Marshlands Inn, which includes various materials pertaining to the Read Stone Company and grindstone production, including primarily photographs, as well as graphic drawings, newspaper clippings, and other textual records.

Second accession, contains materials pertaining to the Read Stone Company, grindstone production, and the Read family. Content includes primarily photographs, as well as postcards, articles, and a guest book from the Marshlands Inn which was formerly the Read home, and that contained a museum devoted to displaying the history of the grindstone industry in Sackville.

Personal Papers

This series consists of correspondence, receipts, contracts, certificates, victory loans, insurance policies, deeds, and court documents produced by the activities of members of the Spinney family of St George. Individuals named in these documents include Mrs. Abram Goss, Mr Abram Goss, Llewellyn Spinney, Miss Anita Spinney, Richard W. Ramsey, Mrs. Anita Grearson, G.C. Crowe, Ron Farquharson, Mrs. W. There is a sectional Aeronautical chart of Boston (V-10), n.d.; blueprints of the barge "Minca" built for the Ministry of War, 1944; a Lee Wilcox poem; newspaper clipping about the replica of the schooner "Bluenose"; work orders for the annual refit of the patrol boat "Gull Light," 1970.

This fonds consists mainly of correspondence among members of the various branches of Pollok and Gilmour, especially to and from Alexander Rankin of Rankin and Gilmour.

It also includes personal financial records of Alexander and Robert Rankin and North American travel diaries of Allen Gilmour, Jr. and Sr. and William Ritchie, dating from 1828 to 1829, and a report on the proceedings at the Prince of Wales' Challenge Cup competition (1862).

It includes account books and day books for the Chatham Foundry and a time book for the saw mill. Fonds consists mainly of documents related to McCain family-owned businesses during the period of 1815-1967. Contained within the fonds are ledgers, account books, notebooks, receipts, and business correspondence with company associates. Family correspondence is shared by the following McCain family members: Andrew, Hazel, Henry and his wife, Mary, Muriel, Hugh Gordon, Billy, Hugh John, and John McCain. Photographs, dated 1880 to1931, show family members. Also included in the fonds are maps which show the locations of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; Glassville, NB; Winnipeg, Manitoba; and Carleton County, NB.

E. V. Wetmore & Sons

This fonds consists of business records for the stairbuilding business established by E. V. Wetmore in Saint John in the 1870s. It consists of a time book (1935-1938) that records the names of employees, the number of hours worked, and the wages paid; an account ledger (1930-1945) that records the names of the customers, their place of residence, the amount charged, and the method of payment (cash, cheque, contra account, note); and an 1892 catalogue for E. V. Wetmore & Sons. A pamphlet on curling and a programme for a dinner in honour of the 1938 Scottish curling team are also included.

Two photographs, one each of a group of men attending the 1930 Canadian Construction Association conference (Wetmore was president of the Saint John branch) and of a group of men in a school (ca. 1914), were transferred to the Photographic Section.
