Somers Newton, Alice Maud
The fonds consists of handwritten and typed letters from Alice Mayo Hof to L. Keith Ingersoll. It appears she corresponded with Keith because he was the Grand Manan St. Croix Courier Newspaper reporter. It sounds like he contacted her originally. He asked questions which she answered about her time on Grand Manan. They first came to Grand Manan Island in September 1923. They purchased a house in North Head in 1928 that had been built by William Dixon in 1881. The North Head people were not very nice to the Hofs - told and made up lies about them. She totally loved Grand Manan but after years of being accused of being German sympathizers and of signalling them during the War, she had to sell the house and forever after had no good thing to say about North Head and the people, except for very few. She sold the house to Ross Russell. She subscribed to the St. Croix Courier newspaper and discussed Keith's weekly offering, covering many topics. She moved to California with her daughter and family where she was quite content. Her last letter was written on January 17, 1958.
