104th Anti-tank Battery, 7th Anti-Tank Regiment RCA collection

This fonds consists primarily of histories of the 104th Anti-Tank Battery and the 7th Anti-Tank Regiment Royal Canadian Artillery and supporting materials. Included are a printed history of the 7th Anti-Tank Regiment, a photocopied history of the 104th Battery dating to 1945, and photocopied listings of officers and other ranks, along with the names of fatal casualties, their dates of death, and the names of those wounded in action.

Also included is a b&w group photograph of the 104th Anti-Tank Battery (1940), a colour photograph of the formation flashes and other distinguishing insignia of the Canadian Army [after 1939], colour negatives of the 104th Battery at the Experimental Station (Fredericton), and colour negatives of shoulder flashes of the Canadian Military.

MILTON F. GREGG, V.C. FONDS

These documents were the personal papers of Milton Gregg. They were not the papers of the offices which he held. They include his copies of a few of his many reports from official positions and well as his personal observations to family on several assignments. The Biographical Sketch information above was gleaned from this fonds.

The fonds also included many private papers, including several hundred letters during the First World War to his fiancée in Canada, personal correspondence to family, and observations on his work in Indonesia in the form of letters to his sister. He and his family kept clippings of his exploits from his time as a student at the Provincial Normal School, throughout his life, and until his death and funeral.

After his death, his wife, Erica Deichmann Gregg, continued to add to the collection of clippings. Various organizations kept in contact with Erica Gregg after his death, notably the Victoria Cross Association and the Royal Canadian Regiment Association. Some files continue beyond his death in 1978.

The fonds contains 1656 photographs from ca.1880 to 1988 and cover all aspects of his life. It addition, it contains a number of photo albums, including 2 which were presented to him in Indonesia, one of which graphically shows the affects of yaws on the children in that country. Also in the photo series are images of Gregg with King Edward VIII, King George VI, and Queen Elizabeth II. Although George V presented him with the MC and VC, there are no photos with that monarch. There are also photos with Lord Beaverbrook, Senator John F. Kennedy, Golda Meir and several Canadian prime ministers.

Arthur Hill Gillmor family

This fonds documents the business, political, and personal activities of Arthur Hill Gillmor; the business activities of his father and brothers, the personal activities of his wife, Hannah; and the business, professional, and personal activities of their children and grandchildren. It sheds light on the A. H. Gillmor family's personal relationships and their relationships with kin, notably, Hannah Gillmor's mother, her sisters, Lucretia, Maria, and Harriet, and their husbands, H. E. Seelye, Henry Beckwith, and J. A. Davidson / Davison respectively.

The fonds also documents, to a more limited extent, the personal activities of Hannah Dawes Howe and her son, Albion Pratt Howe, as a Union Army soldier during the American Civil War. It sheds light on the challenges her sons, daughters, and sons- and daughters-in-laws faced as they rebuilt their lives in the American and Canadian West. Taken collectively, these records explore a variety of themes, including New Brunswick politics, the role of a politician's wife, children and childhood in the colonial era, lumbering in Charlotte County, outmigration, Confederation, tariffs (National Policy), free trade, prohibition, temperance, railway building, and the role of religion in 19th century New Brunswick.

Business records (1846-1894) document the ebb and flow of both the Gillmor enterprises and the economy of Charlotte County and point to periods of financial difficulty for the Gillmor family. Included are administrative, financial, and legal records for the Gillmor family's extensive lumbering, sawmilling, mercantile and trading businesses, such as correspondence, invoices, accounts, bills payable and receivable, cashbooks, daybooks, account ledgers, receipts, bills of lading, survey bills, orders, time books (wages), bank books, tally book, timber licenses, deeds, agreements, and promissory notes, along with insurance papers pertaining to the schooner "Ben Bolt". A very few documents pertaining to the Bonny River Lumber Company are available.

Political records (1857-1897) reflect A. H. Gillmor's activities as a member of the House of Assembly, as provincial secretary in A. J. Smith's short-lived administration, and as a member of the Dominion Parliament. The bulk of these records is comprised of incoming correspondence which, along with discussions on political subjects and issues, contains comments of a personal nature. A very few draft outgoing letters are included. During his political career, Gillmor corresponded with many political leaders and public figures including, Samuel Leonard Tilley, Albert J. Smith, George F. Hill, J. E. Knight, George D. Street, W. H. Chaffey, B. R. Stevenson, James Brown, John McAdam, Edward Jack, Charles Fisher, William Wedderburn, W. B. Kinnear, and T. W. Anglin.

Political records also include notices addressed to the electors of Charlotte County; listings of voters; draft and printed speeches prepared for election campaigns and on political issues (i.e., Confederation, tarrifs, prohibition); draft and printed bills (House of Assembly and House of Commons); petitions addressed to lieutenant governors (J. H. T. Manners Sutton and A. H. Gordon), the Executive Council, the House of Assembly, the House of Commons, A. H. Gillmor, and others (including 5 from widows and family of Revolutionary War veterans); and printed speeches, pamphlets and other material on such subjects as capital punishment (Louis Riel), railways, boundaries, treaties, free trade, protectionism, the Irish question, and the Paris exhibition.

Personal and family records (1859-1899) consist primarily of correspondence. Of particular interest are letters between A. H. Gillmor and his wife, Hannah, and to A. H. Gillmor from his children. Letters from A. H. Gillmor to his wife discuss both personal and political matters. The Gillmor children's letters offer insights into 19th century childhood, their relationship with their father and mother, the education of girls and boys, student life at the Collegiate School in Fredericton (1870s), and social, business, and political activities in Charlotte County. As well, there are a number of letters to A. H. Gillmor from his brother-in-law, Henry E. Seelye which provide details of business, political, and personal matters. Seelye's letters dated after 1861 describe his business and political activities in the American and Canadian West, as well as family matters.

There are also letters between Hannah Gillmor and her children, mother and siblings. Letters from her brother, A. Pratt Howe, provide information about his activities in the Union Army. Letters to Hannah Gillmor from her mother and sisters, Maria Beckwith, Lucretia Seelye, and Harriet Davidson, provide information about family matters and the challenges the Beckwiths, Seelyes, and Davidsons faced constructing new lives in the West.

The fonds includes letters to the Gillmor children -- Adela, Daniel, Henry E., and Percy -- from their father. Several letters between family members, dating to 1878, detail Percy H. Gillmor's experiences and behaviour while attending the Collegiate School. Accounts concerning the cost of Adela, Henry, and Percy's education and training are included. There are also a few letters addressed to A. H. Gillmor's father, Daniel Gillmor; Hannah Howe; Lucretia and Henry E. Seelye; Harriet Davidson; and Aunt Sarah.

Lastly, there is a diary of a voyage by an unnamed traveller from Saint John, N.B. to Liverpool, England, and return (1886); along with a genealogical chart of the Gillmor family; a few newspaper clippings; and manuscript and printed copies of poetry.

Kirk McColl United Church (St. Stephen) fonds : [1794-1988]

The fonds consists of the records of Kirk-McColl United Church and both the founding churches. It includes registers of baptisms, marriages and burials, membership rolls and communicants' registers. There are minutes and financial records of the governing bodies of both churches. There are records of various church youth groups including the Young People's Society and C.G.I.T. (Canadian Girls in Training) and of women's groups including detailed records of a needle craft group, 1949-1989, United Church Women, Women's Missionary Society and Utopia Guild. There are photo directories and photographs of the church and some correspondence, especially about the rebuilding of the church in 1981. There is also a group of historical records which includes personal papers of Duncan McColl.

Kirk McColl United Church (St. Stephen, N.B.)

Dixon family fonds

This fonds consists of three main groups of records: the correspondence, memoirs and business records of Charles Dixon (1731-1817); the legal records and correspondence of Edward and James Dixon, with genealogical notes about the family, compiled by James in the 1880s and 1890s; and the records of several local organizations assembled by James while he was an officer of these organizations.

Charles Dixon's records contain a detailed memoir describing his arrival in Sackville with his family in 1772. Correspondence and legal records of Dixon's personal and family business are included, as are records created in his roles as justice of the peace, overseer of the poor, and other public positions. The records give insight into many of the political and religious issues of the time. They include three agreements to buy and sell negro or black slaves, 1792-1795. Also included is the petition of Moses Delesdernier (dated 1780) claiming for expenses incurred in settling and dividing the township of Hopewell from 1774 to 1776. This petition listed expenses incurred for aboriginal women who assisted him in his travels and expenses for housing a Negro in sickness. Dixon corresponded and did business with many of the important political and social figures of the day including Jonathan Odell, Governor Haldimand, Amos Botsford and Isaac Allen.

Edward and James' records consist largely of legal and land documents and family correspondence. James' genealogical notes and correspondence are also included.

There are accounts for the Sackville and Westmorland Agricultural Society, 1871-1872. Records of the Sackville Methodist Chapel, 1816-1890, consist of deeds and financial records about building the chapel and include a history of Methodism in Sackville, handwritten by James Dixon about 1890. There are also accounts of the Sackville Rural Cemetery, 1875-1935.

G. Earle Logan fonds

The fonds documents the professional legal career of G. Earle Logan from 1923-1948. It consists of case files that include correspondence and legal documents pertaining to divorce, bankruptcy, the settling of estates, the collection of debts, adoptions, property transactions, and civil suits.

Also included are records relating to the Royal Canadian Legion, the New Brunswick Board of Commissioners of Public Utilities, the Wartime Prices and Trade Board, and personal and family matters.

Logan, G. Earle

St. Thomas University fonds

The fonds consists mainly of financial and administrative records for St. Thomas University and its predecessor institution, St. Thomas College. Financial records, including account books, ledgers, and bank books, 1910-1957. Administrative records include correspondence about the payment of tuition fees for students under programs of the Indian Affairs Branch, the Department of National Defence and the Department of Veterans' Affairs, 1949-1959, along with a listing of boarders and day scholars of St. Thomas College, 1910-1911, a copy of the constitution of the Students' Union of St. Thomas University, 1968-1969, a report entitled, "Residence Regulations - Men, St. Thomas University, Fredericton [1960s?], and a few other records.

Also included are printed brochures; souvenir programmes; biographical sketches of 11 priests (Rogers, Costello, Ploude, Reath, Pageau, Sheridan, Roach (2), Finnigan, Meader, and Pickett); a very few newspaper articles [1960s?]; and 4 photographs of building construction on the Fredericton campus.

There are also St. Thomas College / St. Thomas University calendars, dating from the 1911-1912 academic year to the 1985-1986 academic year, either in hard copy, on microfilm, or in both forms. Several years are missing in this run, more specifically, 1919-1920; 1920-1921; 1921-1922; 1924-1925; 1926-1927; 1928-1929; 1931-1932; and 1936-1937.

The fonds contains a few records relating to the university's student newspaper, "The Aquinian". There are 6 issues (originals) of "The Aquinian" (October, November, and December, 1964; February 1965; 13 February 1967; and 25 March 1968); several draft articles; an issue of "Nike", the newspaper's literary supplement (1965); and a few other records.

Student files, dating from 1914-1983, on microfilms F11808-F11812 are restricted. St. Thomas University faculty meeting minutes, 1967-1982, and St. Thomas University Senate minutes, 1968-3 June 1982, are available only on microfilm F11813.

St. Thomas University (Chatham and Fredericton, N.B.)

Sterling A. Limerick fonds

This fonds documents the life, work, and social activities of Sterling Alexander Limerick, of Fredericton, N.B., primarily through his personal diaries, 1914-1964. There are also 2 scrapbooks of newspaper clippings (1917-1963), loose newspaper clippings (1906-1963), 35 photographs and postcards, certificates of membership issued to Sterling A. Limerick by Hiram Lodge No. 6 and Neill's Quarter Century Club, printed material, and a single artefact.

Sterling A. Limerick's personal diaries begin in 1914, when he was 23-years-old, and run consecutively to 1964, a few months before his death, aged 73 years. There are 2 diaries each for 1922 and 1935, and a 5-year diary, for 1945-1949, that overlaps with individual diaries for these years. The brief entries document Sterling Limerick's lengthy career in retail with James S. Neill & Sons, his social activities with family and friends, and community events and newsworthy happenings, such as fires, floods, court cases, criminal activity, elections, parades, celebrations, exhibitions, sporting events (particularly men's and women's hockey, baseball, horse racing, and curling), marriages, and deaths.

Entries recorded during World War I note specific events, such as the declaration of war (August 4), the sinking of the Lusitania (May 1915), fundraising efforts, recruitment drives, and the departure of troops for the Front. His diaries for the 1930s offer little comment on the effects of the Great Depression on Fredericton's economy or its residents. He does note, however, that his wages were reduced several times during that decade, and he includes details of the preparations made for the visit of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth to Fredericton in 1939. During World War II, he records a limited amount of information about the war effort, most notably, the outbreak of the war, the launch or results of a few key offensives, the declaration of the armistice, and the return of soldiers.

The scrapbooks and loose newspaper clippings contain information about Fredericton social events, local fires, floods, court cases (including the Hamilton murder of Burgoyne, 1949), sports, election results, The Royal Visit of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (1939), the Limerick family and extended family, the masonic lodge, the shriners, marriages, and deaths among other matters.

Included among the photographs are 2 studio portraits of Sterling A. Limerick, photographs of his brothers and other family members, snaps taken of him with his friends while on automobile trips (1914), a single photo of 4 women sitting in an early model automobile (ca. 1914), mock wedding photos in which members of the Algonquin Club probably participated, and several group photos of Sterling Limerick with fellow curlers taken at curling bonspiels. There are also 4 postcards, 3 pertaining to the Algonquin Club and 1 of an automobile decorated for a parade [ca. 1920?].

Printed material includes the city of Fredericton's official programme for the celebration of the coronation of His Majesty King Edward VII, August 9th, 1902; a programme for several activities at the Arctic Rink; 2 dinner menus for banquets held by the Fredericton Curling Club to celebrate its 100th anniversary (1954); A tribute to D. Leo Dolan (booklet), January 1950 (31 pp.); and an advertising flyer for a 4-act, comedy drama entitled, "The Doctor’s Private Secretary,” held at the Opera House, and sponsored by the Fredericton Tennis Club, [19-].

Also included is a single artefact -- a small, wooden curling "stone" commemorating the Fredericton Curling Club's 100th anniversary, 1854-1954.

Limerick, Sterling Alexander

This fonds consists primarily of the professional business records of barrister, solicitor and civil servant, E. Allison MacKay of Fredericton, New Brunswick. It consists of business correspondence, legal documents, receipts, memoranda, and statements of account. Much of his legal work related to property transactions, the settling of estates (probate), debts, bankruptcy, immigration, and civil suits. A Presbyterian, he accepted several legal cases involving the Presbyterian Church of Canada, notably, Ferguson et al v. McLean et al, a dispute arising in the congregation of St. James Presbyterian Church at Newcastle, N.B. over union with the United Church of Canada.

The fonds also includes correspondence, circulars, minutes of meeting, and notes relating to MacKay's work as secretary of the executive committee of the Children's Aid Society, chaired by W. J. West, that facilitated the placement of evacuated British children in the homes of York and Sunbury County residents during World War Two.

Also included are a few pieces of personal correspondence, as well as documents, correspondence and other material pertaining to his work with, or membership, in the Independent Order of Foresters, the Knights of Pythias, and St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church.
