Brenda Ford fonds

Original letters and attached news clippings received from Mrs. Brenda (James) Ford, Coppastiona Tree Farm, R.R. #3, Moncton, (Stoney Creek) NB to the Department of Transportation (often the Deputy Minister) and copies of the responses sent to these letters, 1967-2007. She and her husband ran a tree farm and were very interested in rural beautification. Some of the letters were prompted by the actions of their neighbours who had brought unsightly buildings to their properties or buildings which were obstructions to safe motoring.

Dominant themes in the letters include an issue regarding the paving of a highway interfering with the Ford's driveway, complaints regarding the Petitcodiac River Dam Causeway, and issues regarding the Gunningsville Bridge. Other topics include building removal from highway right-of-ways (particularly the Helen Steeves (McGrath) house in Moncton), signage regulations on highway right-of-ways, frog crossing signage, easements of right-of-ways, controversy regarding changes to the Weldon highway (includes deed and mortgage for Hartley property), forestry consultation, elections of MLAs particularly the Confederation of Regions (CoR) party (1991), criminal activity in the Ford’s neighbourhood and an RCMP inquiry, mail theft, billboards, tractor-trailer roof icing, harassment by tractor-trailer drivers of female drivers, beautification of Route 114 (includes poem), the Adopt-A-Highway program, railway transport (CNR and CPR), NB usage of gravel trucked from Quebec and its relation to the spread of ragweed, Protected Areas Strategy for forested areas, paving of Highway 114 (includes photos), and drinking and driving of a neighbour of Mrs. Ford. There is also correspondence regarding continuing confidentiality where Mrs. Ford explains how she protects the security of her letters (1991).

Some of the people involved in the correspondence include R. H. Sweet (Deputy Minister of Public Works), D. L. Sehuelt (Deputy Minister of Transportation), Lyle Smith (Deputy Minister of Transportation), Donald J. McCrea (Deputy Minister of Transportation), and David J. Johnstone (Minister of Transportation).

There is also a copy of “Terms of Reference: A Risk Assessment and Emergency Response Program for the Corridor Road Passing Through Baker Brook, Verret, and Saint-Jacques Watersheds” from the NB DOT, 1993, including maps, and obituaries of James Amos Ford (1882-1979) and Brenda Ford (1921-2012).

The collection consists of minutes, financial records, and internal memos relating to the Fredericton Exhibition Committee. It also includes the Fredericton Agricultural Society No. 34 board of directors minutes, financial records, prize lists and internal memos; a shareholder's certificate of stock ownership in the Fredericton Horse Racing Association; and a horse-racing scorecard from the Stanley Fair.

This collection consists mainly of reports of royal commissions and other bodies, assembled for information of the Atlantic Provinces Transportation Commission. Vernon Bagley oral history

Fonds consists of audiocassette tapes and a typed transcript of interviews with Vernon Bagley. He recalls his part in the 1963 rescue of Floyd Jones and of a drowning at Castalia. He tells stories of pirates on the Islands and also of some situations he encounters while working as a provincial game warden.

Eddie and Walter Williamson oral history

This fonds consists of a taped and transcribed interview with Eddie and Walter Williamson. They who talk about their descendants, their childhood and family, and their lives spent working together in the 1930s and 1940s at Beacon Press in St. Andrews.

Hazel Deinstadt Bell

Hazel Deinstadt Bell's reminiscences about growing up in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, and Saint John, New Brunswick, take the form of a letter to her great nieces and nephews, and were written in the 1950s. She recalls the introduction of the telephone, activities along the waterfront in Yarmouth, as well as street cars, hurdygurdies, trained bears, and Hallowe'en celebrations, in Saint John. She also mentions the Boer War (South African War), attending school, silent movies, outbreaks of smallpox, the exhibition, paddlewheel boats on the St. John River, and a visit to New York in 1901. She makes brief comments about her time overseas during World War I.

The fonds also includes a very few newspaper clippings containing information about her time in England and France, during World War I, and her father's career as a pastor in the Methodist Church.

Kirk McColl United Church (St. Stephen) fonds : [1794-1988]

The fonds consists of the records of Kirk-McColl United Church and both the founding churches. It includes registers of baptisms, marriages and burials, membership rolls and communicants' registers. There are minutes and financial records of the governing bodies of both churches. There are records of various church youth groups including the Young People's Society and C.G.I.T. (Canadian Girls in Training) and of women's groups including detailed records of a needle craft group, 1949-1989, United Church Women, Women's Missionary Society and Utopia Guild. There are photo directories and photographs of the church and some correspondence, especially about the rebuilding of the church in 1981. There is also a group of historical records which includes personal papers of Duncan McColl.

Kirk McColl United Church (St. Stephen, N.B.)

MILTON F. GREGG, V.C. FONDS

These documents were the personal papers of Milton Gregg. They were not the papers of the offices which he held. They include his copies of a few of his many reports from official positions and well as his personal observations to family on several assignments. The Biographical Sketch information above was gleaned from this fonds.

The fonds also included many private papers, including several hundred letters during the First World War to his fiancée in Canada, personal correspondence to family, and observations on his work in Indonesia in the form of letters to his sister. He and his family kept clippings of his exploits from his time as a student at the Provincial Normal School, throughout his life, and until his death and funeral.

After his death, his wife, Erica Deichmann Gregg, continued to add to the collection of clippings. Various organizations kept in contact with Erica Gregg after his death, notably the Victoria Cross Association and the Royal Canadian Regiment Association. Some files continue beyond his death in 1978.

The fonds contains 1656 photographs from ca.1880 to 1988 and cover all aspects of his life. It addition, it contains a number of photo albums, including 2 which were presented to him in Indonesia, one of which graphically shows the affects of yaws on the children in that country. Also in the photo series are images of Gregg with King Edward VIII, King George VI, and Queen Elizabeth II. Although George V presented him with the MC and VC, there are no photos with that monarch. There are also photos with Lord Beaverbrook, Senator John F. Kennedy, Golda Meir and several Canadian prime ministers.

John Ullock

This collection was compiled by John Ullock and reflects his research interests. It consists of his histories of freemasonry on the Miramichi (photocopy) and of the Rankin-Hutchinson house (microfilm); photocopies of excerpts from books on the histories of Halifax and the railways; and a photocopy of Helen E. Anstiss's essay on Sir Samuel Cunard.

Also included are originals or photocopies and a microfilm copy of 3 issues of the monthly newspaper, "The Cariboo Courier" (March, May, and July, 1872), as well as a photocopy of the periodical, "The Blue Banner" (June 1925), published in the interests of church union in New Brunswick. There are also notes on the genealogy of the Ullock family and one lithograph each of two pen and ink sketches of buildings located near the corner of Water and George streets in Chatham.

Many of the photographs in the collection depict wharves located in New Brunswick communities, including Neguac, Lower Newcastle, Tabusintac, Mills Point, Loggieville, Oak Point, and Black Brook. There are also photos of the Chatham post office, of sailing ships, and of the beach at Richibucto. The photographs have been moved to the Photograph Section (P284).
