Hannah Flood lot certificate

The fonds consists of a lot certificate given to Hannah Flood in 1837. It is for lot 35 in the southeast range in Willow Grove, Loch Lomond. The certificate was given by the body responsible for administration of Crown grants to the Black refugees. It is unclear whether Hannah Flood had actually purchased the land.

Chaloner family

The fonds consists of family records. There are two lot certificates for land on Germain Street, dated 1783, belonging to John Chaloner (lot 553) and Benjamin Chaloner (lot 554). There is a commission of 1827 appointing Benjamin Chaloner tide surveyor, gauger, and weightmaster in Saint John. There is also a bond, dated 1828, given by Ninyon Chaloner to Benjamin C. Chaloner, executor of John Chaloner's estate. It bound Ninyon to ensure that Peggy, a Black woman who had been the late John Chaloner's servant, received comfortable care during her lifetime and at her death, a decent burial at Ninyon's expense.

Frederick Maine Cochrane

This fonds consists of 2 papers written by Cochrane, "History of the St. Martins, New Brunswick built ships" is a 256-page manuscript which includes details of the history of St. Martins area, lists of the master mariners and captains of coasters from St. Martins and statistics on the tonnage of St. Martins built ships. There are records of many of the local vessels giving: names, types of vessel, tonnage, dates built and names of owners. There are also some information on captains, crew, passengers, incidents or accidents, mutinies, damage due to storms, shipwrecks, vessel dimensions, cargos and sailing routes, which included the West Indies, the U.K., Europe and Australia.

The other paper, "The whale fishing industry of Saint John, N.B.", is about the history of the whale fishing industry in Saint John from 1830 to 1850. Material includes a list of the St. John Mechanics Whale Fishing Company officers and stockholders, 1837. There are details of the dividends paid in 1841 and a list of ships owned by the company. This manuscript provides information about Charles Stewart, a pioneer in the whale fishery in Saint John, and the commander of the last whaling ship which sailed from the city in 1848 and about James Millidge who was also engaged in this industry. Other subjects include uses for the whale oil and whale bone, and amounts of whale oil carried aboard the ships.

Liquor offences recordbook, Saint John City and County

The fonds consists of 1 volume of records of liquor offences which occurred in the City and County of Saint John, New Brunswick during the period 1913-1917. The offences took place in the parishes of Lancaster, Simonds, and St. Martins. Information includes names of offenders, the stipendary magistrates, and the chief inspectors as well as the nature of the offence, the fines levied and the parish. There are several repeat offenders in these records. Offences included keeping liquor for sale or barter and selling liquor without a license.

Treasurer of the City and County of Saint John

This fonds consists of the records of the Treasurer of the City and County of Saint John. It includes the County Treasurer's private ledger for 1875 and his cash books from 1861 to 1866 and from 1895 to 1896. There are drafts of the bv-laws for the City and County, 1876-1922, and reports of the Finance Committee, 1901-1905. There is also a record of all the licenses issued to surveyors of lumber in the county, 1894-1917.

There are correspondence, estimates and bills about the management of the county gaol, including the construction and repair of the building and the new fire regulations. Applications for a Lancaster police position and a request from the Council of Women that a female be appointed police and gaol matron are included.

There are records of the administration of the court house and the court system, which was the responsibility of the City and County government. They include the Treasurer's records of payment of fees to witnesses and juries for the Circuit Court, the County Court and the Supreme Court, 1876 to 1889. There is a record of the fees paid to the Coroner for inquests and views of bodies, including brief notes of the results of some inquests, 1901-1907. There are also records dealing with the work of the court stenographers including a transcript of a case of rum running in 1937.
