The fonds consists of correspondence between McFarlane family members. Most of the letters are addressed to Emmeretta Amanda McFarlane, who is usually called Amanda in the letters. Her brother's letters describe life in the California woods in the early 1880s, with comments about wages, the climate and latterly, his wife's strokes and eventual death. Letters from other family members discuss mostly news of family and friends.
