Ministers Island

This fonds contains material related to the history of Ministers Island. It includes a transcription of an interview with Wade Veinotte, who used to work on the island, as well as reports, feasibility studies, and development plans related to proposals to turn Ministers Island into a Provincial Park or other cultural resource, essays on the history of the island or the Van Horne family, photocopies of historic publications on the Van Horne family property and Sir William Van Horne, a booklet for an exhibition of paintings by Cathy Ross of artifacts belonging to the Van Horne family on Ministers Island, and transcriptions of original legal documents and correspondence related to the first European occupants of Ministers Island, John Hanson and his family.

Notes points of interest, including Watts’ Wharf, Raits’ Wharf, Roman Catholic Church, Wilson’s Wharf, Fort Tipperary, Greenock Presbyterian Church, Church of England, Market Wharf, Chamcook Mountain, Market Square and Town Hall, Steamboat Wharf, Old Steam Saw Mill. On the reverse, there is a sketch of the military land at the East Block House Saint Andrews NB, surveyed by William Mahood 1867.

The fonds consists of two separate branches, Passamaqoddy and St. Croix. The former containing mostly Ladies Auxiliary with accounting history, memberships, and costs, and surrender of their charters and rights in 2018. The latter consists of meeting minutes of all sub-branches and memberships. Some reference to the Great War Veterans Association, a predecessor to the Royal Canadian Legion with a partial history of the branch since it’s founding. Further sub-branches covered by or in relation to the St. Croix branch is included, such as Beavers, Scouts, Ladies, Sr., and Jr. Auxiliary.

Hooper Family Fonds

Textural material, photographs and negatives, ephemera, and small objects relating to the Hooper family and St. Andrews Seniors Club. The photos are of various people, places, scenery, and events from Charlotte County and of the last century. Most textural material is newspaper and newspaper clippings of various importance such as obituaries to a local report on the Hooper lives to poems dedicated to living and resting members of their family. Ephemera is not necessarily connected intellectually to the Hooper family, but rather can be related due to the material being enclosed with other supporting material. Other textual material can include documentation and biographies of members of the family and their accomplishments and passing.

Pagan Point Nature Preserve

This collection contains a flyer and articles related to the opening of Pagan Point Nature Preserve in St. Andrews, New Brunswick. A popular area for walks located on the south-eastern shore of St. Andrews which looks out over the Passamaquoddy Bay, it contains a wooded area, a salt marsh, and a sandy beach. In the year 2000 the land was sold for development, but the new owners separated a portion of the land for residential use and donated 30 acres to the Nature Trust of New Brunswick Inc. Pagan Point is notable for the ecological significance of its salt marshes, as well as for archaeological findings related to the Passamaquoddy Tribe, for which the area is also designated a Provincial Historic Site.

Jackie Gibson Collection

This collection contains correspondences, documents, photos, and other types of material related to Joseph and Effie Gibson and their descendants. Most of the correspondence in this collection concerns Joe Gibson, a Royal Canadian Air Force pilot and oldest son of Joseph and Effie Gibson. Many photos of him and his crewmates, his letters home from overseas, as well as his schoolwork and notes from leaning how to fly an aircraft are also included in this collection. Several items which concern the affairs of John Gibson, Joe Gibson’s younger brother, can be found in this collection. These include correspondences and legal documents related to the estate of Charlotte Gibson, his sister, as well as an agreement between John Gibson and the Canada Railroad Company concerning interest and his land. Most of the personal items and published material in this collection belonged to John Gibson as well, these include publications related to his position as a volunteer firefighter, reports of organizations he belonged to, maps of the Town of St. Andrews, notes related to his work as a stonemason, and other items.
