William Park family

This fonds documents the business, professional, and personal activities of members of the William Park family and extended families (Winslow, Hansard, and Scott), of Newcastle (now Miramichi), Northumberland County, New Brunswick, including William Park, Sr.; William Adam Park; his wife, Edith Winslow Park; their son, Francis William (Frank) Park; Margaret McLaggan Park; William L. Scott; Margaret Bell Hansard; Constance Mary Hansard; France E. Winslow; Constance M. Park Peters; and Christianna Park Bishop.

William Park, Sr.'s records include 3 certificates of appointment (1859 and 1865); receipts (1866-1867) and a single return (1857) relating to his work as commission of roads / highways; 3 deeds, a mortgage, and a bond; 2 draft articles of co-partnership, 1 each between him and John Alexander, Jr. and Alexander McLaggan (January 1855) and Alexander McLaggan (September 1855); 2 agreements, 1 each between him and Jane Davidson (1863) and David Ritchie, John Ritchie, Robert Ritchie, and Allan Ritchie (1872); William Park, Sr.'s estate records, including a copy of his will (1896-1906); share certificates (1864, 1887, and 1901); purchase agreements for pew number no. 2 in St. James Presbyterian Church and for burial lots in the church cemetery (1850, 1863, 1889); and 3 pieces of correspondence (1858 and 1869).

William Adam Park's records include 6 commissions of appointment (1875, 1887, 1888); 9 pieces of correspondence, 7 pertaining to the provincial election of 1887; his personal account book of expenses (1910-1923); 2 letter books relating to his position as collector of customs (1869-1896, 1894-1998); 1 deed; 1 share in the Miramichi Agricultural Exhibition Association; an assignment of interest in pew no. 22, St. James Presbyterian Church; and an agreement between Peter McLaggan and William A. Park (1912).

Edith Winslow Park's records include a letter from H. V. Parker, offering condolences on the death of her husband, William A. Park (1924); 2 cook books (printed); and graphic material, notably, 20 watercolours of plants and flowers, 12 place cards in pen and ink with touches of watercolour, an illuminated Lord's Prayer in calligraphy, and a watercolour of a stone church on birchbark.

Francis William (Frank) Park's records include 3 transcripts of interviews conducted with him by Barry and Janet Toole, in 1994, (49 pp.) that focus on his family, working life, and activities as a communist activist. He discusses his life in New Brunswick and Ontario (Ottawa) during World War II, his marriage, and his travels to Mexico, Russia, Cuba ("Canadian Tribune"), and elsewhere. There are also 2 post cards (1939, 1946), and notes on the Park family genealogy.

The fonds also includes a few records of extended family members. Margaret McLaggan Park's records include a partial letter from Catherine Scott, Andrew Scott's wife, that outlines the Scotts' move to Minneapolis and their new life in the western United States (1862); William L. Scott's records include a bill of sale between him and David Mott for a chestnut wall-eyed mare, sled, and harness (1830). There are also Margaret Bell Hansard's recipe book (manuscript) [19th c.]; Constance Mary Hansard's recipe book (manuscript) [19th c.]; a deed between Francis E. Winslow and James Fish (1877); a hand-bound, manuscript copy of an illustrated, children's Christmas storybook by Constance M. Park Peters (1927); and letters of administration for the estate of William P. Bishop, Christianna Park Bishop's husband (1907).

The fonds also contains more than 50 photographs of members of the Park, Winslow, and Hansard families, including 2 studio portraits of William A. Park by Notman, of Montreal. The photographs have been moved to PANB's photograph section. See P226 for a listing of items.

Park family (Descendants of William Park Sr.)

John Ullock

This collection was compiled by John Ullock and reflects his research interests. It consists of his histories of freemasonry on the Miramichi (photocopy) and of the Rankin-Hutchinson house (microfilm); photocopies of excerpts from books on the histories of Halifax and the railways; and a photocopy of Helen E. Anstiss's essay on Sir Samuel Cunard.

Also included are originals or photocopies and a microfilm copy of 3 issues of the monthly newspaper, "The Cariboo Courier" (March, May, and July, 1872), as well as a photocopy of the periodical, "The Blue Banner" (June 1925), published in the interests of church union in New Brunswick. There are also notes on the genealogy of the Ullock family and one lithograph each of two pen and ink sketches of buildings located near the corner of Water and George streets in Chatham.

Many of the photographs in the collection depict wharves located in New Brunswick communities, including Neguac, Lower Newcastle, Tabusintac, Mills Point, Loggieville, Oak Point, and Black Brook. There are also photos of the Chatham post office, of sailing ships, and of the beach at Richibucto. The photographs have been moved to the Photograph Section (P284).

Ullock, John

St. Thomas University fonds

The fonds consists mainly of financial and administrative records for St. Thomas University and its predecessor institution, St. Thomas College. Financial records, including account books, ledgers, and bank books, 1910-1957. Administrative records include correspondence about the payment of tuition fees for students under programs of the Indian Affairs Branch, the Department of National Defence and the Department of Veterans' Affairs, 1949-1959, along with a listing of boarders and day scholars of St. Thomas College, 1910-1911, a copy of the constitution of the Students' Union of St. Thomas University, 1968-1969, a report entitled, "Residence Regulations - Men, St. Thomas University, Fredericton [1960s?], and a few other records.

Also included are printed brochures; souvenir programmes; biographical sketches of 11 priests (Rogers, Costello, Ploude, Reath, Pageau, Sheridan, Roach (2), Finnigan, Meader, and Pickett); a very few newspaper articles [1960s?]; and 4 photographs of building construction on the Fredericton campus.

There are also St. Thomas College / St. Thomas University calendars, dating from the 1911-1912 academic year to the 1985-1986 academic year, either in hard copy, on microfilm, or in both forms. Several years are missing in this run, more specifically, 1919-1920; 1920-1921; 1921-1922; 1924-1925; 1926-1927; 1928-1929; 1931-1932; and 1936-1937.

The fonds contains a few records relating to the university's student newspaper, "The Aquinian". There are 6 issues (originals) of "The Aquinian" (October, November, and December, 1964; February 1965; 13 February 1967; and 25 March 1968); several draft articles; an issue of "Nike", the newspaper's literary supplement (1965); and a few other records.

Student files, dating from 1914-1983, on microfilms F11808-F11812 are restricted. St. Thomas University faculty meeting minutes, 1967-1982, and St. Thomas University Senate minutes, 1968-3 June 1982, are available only on microfilm F11813.

This fonds consists of microfilmed copies of parish registers for St. Patrick's Church, South Nelson, dating from 1801-1826 (F1749, F8108); 1826-1858 (F3); 1859-1906 (F7895), and 1959-1972 (F1224) which record baptisms, marriages, and burials.

Microfilm reel no. F3 also contains a history of St. Patrick's Church.

J. Leonard O'Brien

This fonds documents the business activities, political career, and personal life of Joseph Leonard O'Brien.

Records relating to his years in provincial politics include correspondence, notes from his diaries, political scrapbooks, and materials relating to election campaigns and his position as Speaker of the House of Assembly. Federal political records include correspondence, copies of speeches, scrapbooks, photo albums, and materials pertaining to election campaigns and the Progressive-Conservative Association (letters, memos, minutes, briefs). A few of the political records pertain to his father, John O'Brien, who was a member of the House of Assembly for New Brunswick.

Records from J. Leonard O'Brien's years as Lieutenant-Governor of New Brunswick include official and private correspondence, speeches, invitations to various events, thank-you and congratulatory cards, scrapbooks, photo albums, guest books from Government House (1858-1965), an honorary degree, and materials pertaining to royal visits (1950s), the Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem, and the Order of Malta.

Business records include correspondence, financial records, account books, day books, ledgers, agreements, court records, and other material pertaining to O'Brien Limited; correspondence, minutes of board of directors meetings, financial records, agreements, inventories, reports, payroll records, purchase records, account books, ledgers, cash books, sales books, vouchers, invoices, and receipts pertaining to Chatham Industries Limited; correspondence, financial papers, inventories, purchase invoices, sale invoices, and loading orders for Trafalgar Mills Ltd.; and correspondence, financial records, agreements, a copy of the letters patent, a ledger, and reports regarding Plaswood Corporation of Canada. Business records dating to the years prior to 1917 relate to John O'Brien's business activities.

Also included are financial records, correspondence, invoices, account books, general ledgers, and inventories relating to the O'Brien Store; correspondence financial records, and an agreement pertaining to Miramichi Concrete Products Co.; and correspondence, financial records, and guests lists for the Big Hole Salmon Fishing Club, Limited, which was incorporated in 1907 with its heading office in Hillsborough, Albert County; New Brunswick. J. Leonard O'Brien was probably a director or a shareholder or both of this company.

Lastly, the fonds contains his personal records including general and family correspondence; documents pertaining to the O'Brien and McPeake family histories; financial records and photographs; a few records relating to the North West Boom Co., the South West Boom Co., Atlantic Sugar Refineries Ltd., Acadia Pulp and Paper Ltd., Bank of Nova Scotia, and J. McPeake O'Brien Store; documents pertain to the estate of Kathleen O'Brien; and documents and printed material pertaining to a number of associations, clubs, and universities including Canadian Red Cross Society, Boy Scouts of Canada, University of New Brunswick, Université de Moncton, St. Thomas University, and Mount Allison University.

A number of maps showing mineral occurrences, mining claims, the location and extent of Chatham Industries Limited lands, various hydro electric projects, and other areas of the province have been moved to the Map Section. Oversized records also have been moved to the Map Section. Loose photographs have been transferred to the Photograph Section. There are also several lithographs of Fredericton and area dating to the 1830s.

O'Brien, Joseph Leonard

St. Mary's Chapel-of-Ease (Chatham : Anglican) fonds

This fonds contains the administrative records of St. Mary's Chapel-of-Ease and of its various groups and associations. It consists of a register of confirmations (1887), registers of services, record books of contributions, and a record book of loans. Also included are minutes of the Parochial Guild and Women's Association, the Women's Association (senior and girls' branches), and the Rural Deanery, as well as a treasurer's book for the Women's Association (girls' branch) and a few pieces of correspondence relating to the Deanery. The register of services for 1921-1964 also contains entries for St. Paul's Church. Architectural plans and drawings of St. Mary's Chapel-of-Ease were transferred to the Map Section.

Kathleen Willis Williston collection

This collection consists mainly of research notes and writings by Kathleen Williston and others. Her research notes reveal her particular interest in the early history of the Miramichi and surrounding area and its people, the Acadians and First Nations. The remainder of the collection consists of copies of records (with some originals) collected by Mrs. Williston from many sources, several of them relating to the Anglican Church. There are also some originals of early printed publications about the Church.
Included among the latter records, but not limited to them, are the following: Madras School in New Brunswick, 30th Report, 1849, and The 6th Annual Report of the Fredericton Institute for the Education of the Deaf and Dumb, 1889.

Williston, Kathleen Willis

Fraser family fonds

This fonds consists of the business records of John Fraser and his sons, Albert J. Fraser and David Fraser. It includes ledgers, day books, receipts, and accounts relating to the store at Black Brook (Loggieville), as well as accounts for David Fraser's fox ranching business. Also included are a court summons addressed to Albert J. Fraser and a few documents relating to the issue of price controls during the Second World War.

McCarthy Family

This fonds consists of McCarthy family correspondence and accounts (1867-1912). Most letters prior to 1900 are between the siblings, but also include correspondence from other individuals regarding payments. The families correspondence provides insight into life in New Brunswick and parts of the United States and reveals how close knit the family was. Their letters deal with a variety of topics, including cholera, education, working in the woods, staple supplies, legal issues, and visits to family members. After 1900, most of the letters are between members of the next generation, especially Patrick McCarthy's children. These letters discuss work in the timber industry, leisure activities, the winter weather, and family news. This fonds also contains records of the families accounts, an inventory of John McCarthy's estate (1892) and a penmanship book belonging to Patrick's brother-in-law, George Smith.
