Royal West India Rangers

A binder which contains a brief essay on the Royal West India Rangers regiment by Daniel F. Johnson of the Saint John branch of the New Brunswick Genealogical Society, articles on military settlers in New Brunswick, and lists of members of the Royal West India Rangers who were disbanded in New Brunswick. Inserted is a note: "it appears that many surnames on the Royal West India Rangers list are also Charlotte County names or perhaps have connections to them or to this area".

St. Andrews Navy League Fonds

The items in this collection belonged to the St. Andrews branch of the New Brunswick Navy League, itself part of the larger Canadian Navy League. The purpose of the St. Andrews Navy League was to organize, manage, promote, and provide funding for a local Sea Cadet corps which they were a sponsor of, the #303 Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps “St. Croix”, formerly “St. Andrew” when it was first formed in 1987. The items in this collection provide information on how the St. Andrews Navy League would support their cadet corps and the different kinds of activities their Sea Cadet corps would participate in.

The different types of items include correspondence, either with people or organizations outside the Navy League or within the Navy League, programs and pamphlets meant to promote the Sea Cadet movement or specific Sea Cadet and Navy League events, documents related to St. Andrews Navy League meetings, including minutes, agendas, and supplementary notes, blank awards or certificates to recognize the contributions of Navy League members or Sea Cadets, documents on the history of the Navy League, documents which outline the internal policies of the Navy League organization, news items and announcements published for promotional purposes which were circulated in public newspapers or within the Navy League and Sea Cadets, documents related to training cadets, financial information, and documents which outline how the Navy League and the different events it would organize were structured.

Hazel Deinstadt Bell

Hazel Deinstadt Bell's reminiscences about growing up in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, and Saint John, New Brunswick, take the form of a letter to her great nieces and nephews, and were written in the 1950s. She recalls the introduction of the telephone, activities along the waterfront in Yarmouth, as well as street cars, hurdygurdies, trained bears, and Hallowe'en celebrations, in Saint John. She also mentions the Boer War (South African War), attending school, silent movies, outbreaks of smallpox, the exhibition, paddlewheel boats on the St. John River, and a visit to New York in 1901. She makes brief comments about her time overseas during World War I.

The fonds also includes a very few newspaper clippings containing information about her time in England and France, during World War I, and her father's career as a pastor in the Methodist Church.

Bertha L. Gregory fonds

Bertha Gregory's journal offers details of her work at the port of Saint John during the winters of 1920-1921 and 1921-1922, particularly with respect to the Red Cross nursery located in the immigration building, Saint John West. She records names of ships arriving; the number of adults, children, and infants aboard; and the ministrations performed.

A number of photographs depicting places and people she worked or served with during her 1919 trip West on Red Cross Train Service for soldiers' dependants, are pasted on several journal pages. Also pasted inside the journal are photographs of Bertha Gregory, her assistants, acquaintances, groups of immigrants, and immigrant children, as well as newspaper clippings, a Canadian Red Cross Society report, and a few letters all relating to her work as a port nurse at Saint John or Québec. There are also samples of Red Cross information cards, in several different languages, which were distributed to arriving immigrants to assist them in locating health care for their families.

The fonds also includes one list each of medical supplies and nursery supplies, several summaries of work performed, several articles about the port nursery, and a pamphlet offering detailed instructions to nurses serving on trains under the Canadian Red Cross Society. A number of newspaper clippings providing biographical information on family members, notably, Bertha L. Gregory; her sisters, Lyla and Clara; her mother, Henrietta; and her grandmother, Susan, are included in the fonds.

Eleven photographs of Bertha Gregory, of the immigrant room and nursery at Saint John (1920s), of Halifax following the explosion (1917), and of Bertha en route to western Canada (1919) accompanied this fonds. They are located in P357 (nos. 25-35).

This fonds consists of historical correspondence, reports, acts, agreements and other material about New Brunswick railways. There are monthly payrolls of Salisbury and Harvey Railway, 1898-1901; accounts of the Albert Railway, 1877-1882; cancelled cheques and promissory notes of the N.B. Railway Co., 1884-1887; and records of the Northern and Western Railway Co., Railway Extension Co., and Cumberland Railway and Coal Co. The collection includes timetables, correspondence, lists of locomotives, notes, notices, newsletters and copies of newspaper articles.

This fonds consists of two certificates. One is Steven's military discharge certificate dated 1902, which contains age, physical description, military unit and date discharged. There is also a freeman's certificate, 1967, presented to Alonzo Stevens and several others in honour of their military service.

John B.M. Baxter

This fonds consists primarily of Baxter's records of the Royal Commission to inquire into statements made by "The Standard" concerning the Provincial Hospital at Fairville, New Brunswick. It includes issues of the paper, drafts of the report and testimony, extracts from the press and correspondence. There is also a number of documents collected by Baxter including letters from famous people and original miltiary records of Saint John, 1808-1926.
